TEMPUR ONE Topper reviewed

The TEMPUR ONE Topper is a 5cm layer of TEMPUR Adapt Material in a zip-off cover, and it is the only mattress topper TEMPUR sells direct in the UK. It comes in one medium feel and three sizes, and a 135x190 double lists at £549 on TEMPUR’s UK shop.

A topper changes the surface, not the support. Five centimetres of viscoelastic foam softens a mattress that feels too hard at the shoulder and hip, and that is often why people buy one. TEMPUR says the ONE Topper belongs on a level sleep surface in good condition, so it is no fix for a mattress that has already started to sag. It is reversible, so either face can go up, and the extra 5cm means your fitted sheets need pockets deep enough for mattress plus topper.

The cover is 99% polyester and 1% elastane and washes at up to 40°C. The foam itself must never be washed, sponged or dry-cleaned, and TEMPUR warns that doing so voids the guarantee. One handling detail in TEMPUR’s care notes is easy to miss: a rolled topper should warm to room temperature before you unroll it, because cold foam can tear or crack. Viscoelastic foam also holds more body heat than latex, so a very hot sleeper may prefer a latex topper.

The price makes more sense set against a mattress. The double lists at £549 against £1,199 for the cheapest TEMPUR double mattress, the EASE 20, so the ONE Topper puts the TEMPUR feel on a firm but sound mattress for less than half the cost of a new TEMPUR bed. By general standards it is still expensive for 5cm of foam. There is no single or small double either, which rules it out for many guest and children’s rooms.

TEMPUR’s country of origin and safety page says the TEMPUR material is made in Denmark and lists mattress toppers among the products tested to BS 7177 low hazard and BS 5852 Crib V. Returns are another point in the topper’s favour. The 30-night topper trial asks you to keep the topper for at least 14 nights, and returns are collected free when booked through TEMPUR’s online form. Under the TEMPUR quality guarantee the foam is covered for 10 years and the cover for two, and delivery to mainland UK is free.
