The Starlight 09 is a 22cm mattress built on a micro pocket spring unit, with a firm reflex foam base underneath and a memory fibre comfort layer on top, made in the UK by Starlight Beds and delivered vacuum-packed in a box. It is the pocket sprung model in Starlight’s budget range, rated medium by the maker, and a single costs £163.99 on Starlight’s own shop (September 2026).

Starlight 09 prices by size

Size Dimensions Regular price
Shorty 75 x 175cm £151.99
Small single 75 x 190cm £146.99
Single 90 x 190cm £163.99
Small double 120 x 190cm £200.99
Double 135 x 190cm £244.99
King 150 x 200cm £272.99

There is no super king. The shorty, 75 x 175cm, is useful for cabin beds and bunks built to that length.

What is inside the Starlight 09?

Starlight lists three components: a micro pocket spring unit, a firm orthopaedic reflex foam base and a memory fibre comfort layer, finished with a hypoallergenic, anti-dust-mite treated sleeping surface. It does not publish layer thicknesses or a spring count. In a pocket sprung mattress each spring sits in its own fabric pocket and reacts to pressure independently, and Starlight says the 09’s unit adapts to your movement in the same way.

Memory fibre is normally a fibre filling rather than a solid layer of memory foam, and Starlight presents it as the more environmentally friendly option. Its product copy also mentions memory foam in places, so the exact make-up of the comfort layer is not spelled out.

Firmness and who it suits

Starlight tags the 09 as medium, which we place at 5 out of 10. That suits back sleepers, lighter side sleepers and children moving out of a cot bed. A systematic review of 24 trials in Sleep Health (Radwan et al., 2015) found medium-firm mattresses, ideally ones the sleeper can adjust, best for comfort and spinal alignment, so heavier adults who need a firmer surface may find the 09 slightly soft through the middle.

Returns, trial and guarantee

Returns are the main compromise with the Starlight 09. There is no sleep trial and no guarantee period on the product page. Starlight’s refund policy gives you 14 days from delivery to cancel, plus 14 more to return the mattress, but only if the plastic hygiene seal is intact, so you cannot lie on it first. That is the minimum cancellation period under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and regulation 28 of the same rules lets a seller exclude sealed goods that are unsuitable for return for hygiene reasons once they have been unsealed. Delivery is free to most of mainland UK.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Starlight 09 is the one to choose in Starlight's range for a single or a child's bed, because its 22cm micro pocket spring build isolates movement at a budget price. Skip it if you want a sleep trial: once the hygiene seal is broken, it cannot be returned unless faulty.”
