“Read the trial terms before the spec sheet, because a boxed mattress is bought unseen and the nights on offer, the conditions attached and who pays for the collection decide how much risk you are really taking.”
A mattress in a box, or bed-in-a-box, is a mattress you buy online that arrives vacuum-packed in a box delivered to your door. The National Bed Federation’s 18th consumer survey (NBF, 2026) found that roll-up mattresses made up 33% of purchases, up from 23.5% in the previous report, and that 55% of mattresses were bought online. The same survey put the mean price paid at £543, down 16% year on year, with almost half of buyers spending less than £400.
The trial replaces the showroom
Because you cannot lie on a boxed mattress before it arrives, the home trial carries the risk. Trials in this ranking run from Ergoflex’s 30 days to Nectar’s 365 nights, and most makers collect an unwanted mattress free of charge. The small print differs more than the headline. OTTY recommends at least 30 nights before deciding, Ergoflex asks you to sleep on the 5G for 21 nights within its 30-day trial and allows one return per household, and Silentnight gives its Sleep Now range 60 nights. Eve’s trial page offers 200 nights, but only the first 40 come with a free return.
The table sets our ten picks side by side. Specifications come from each maker’s UK pages, prices from our check on 28 September 2026.
Foam or springs in the box
Rolling a mattress does not mean giving up springs. Seven of the ten picks here are hybrids, from up to 960 pocket springs in the Panda Hybrid Bamboo to up to 2,000 in the OTTY Original Hybrid. Springs add bounce and let air move through the core, which cuts both ways for couples. The Ergoflex 5G, the Eve Original and the Silentnight Sleep Now Dual Climate are all-foam and suit sleepers who like the slow hug of memory foam, and our memory foam mattress ranking covers more of them.
Delivery, unboxing and the new-foam smell
On the UK mainland a boxed mattress arrives within a day to about a week. Simba ships free the next day on orders placed by 1pm, Origin also delivers free the next day, and Ergoflex does so for orders placed Monday to Thursday before 10am. OTTY quotes 2 to 4 working days and Emma 2 to 7. Check your postcode first, because Simba does not deliver to some areas of Scotland or to any offshore islands, Eve does not deliver to the Scottish Highlands and Islands or Northern Ireland, and OTTY allows up to 10 working days for the far north of Scotland.
Recovery after unboxing varies by maker. Silentnight says a rolled mattress can take up to 2 hours to expand but advises waiting at least 8 hours before sleeping on it, Ergoflex gives a maximum of four hours for the 5G and warns against leaving it compressed for more than four weeks, and OTTY allows 24 to 48 hours for its hybrids to reach full depth.
The smell from new foam is volatile organic compounds (VOCs) leaving the material. In a 32-day study of two new memory foam mattresses (Beckett et al., Chemosphere, 2022), airborne concentrations peaked on the first day, then decayed, and stayed well below health-based benchmarks. A chamber study of eight polyurethane mattresses (Oz et al., Environmental Science & Technology, 2019) found that emissions rose significantly under sleeping conditions, with heat the main driver, and its estimates for a sleeping child reached concerning exposure levels for a few compounds. Air the room well for the first day or two.
How long a boxed mattress should last
The NBF survey puts the average age of a replaced mattress at 6.84 years. Guarantees in this ranking run from 10 years to Nectar’s Forever Warranty. Simba requires a mattress protector to keep its 10-year warranty valid, and Nectar says a protector keeps its Forever Warranty valid, so budget for a mattress protector in the same size.
Beyond the box, traditional builds are in our pocket sprung and latex mattress rankings, and the best mattresses of 2026 covers every build and size.
