Comparison

Best soft mattresses

A soft mattress is the right choice if you sleep on your side, weigh less than average or wake with sore shoulders and hips, provided the soft comfort layer sits on a core that still holds your spine level. This comparison ranks soft and medium-soft mattresses sold in the UK by the maker's declared feel, the support underneath and the price of a double, and shows where soft stops being the right answer.

Best soft mattresses: top pick in detail

Emma Original Elite
Emma Original EliteEmma Original EliteEmma Original Elite
Best overall

Emma Original Elite

The Emma Original Elite is our first choice for a soft mattress because Emma rates it 7.5 on its own firmness scale, where 1 is firm and 10 is soft, and builds that feel on a 7-zone pocket spring core, so shoulders sink in while the lower back stays supported. A double costs £1,159 with a 200-night trial, and Emma itself steers heavier and front sleepers to the firmer Original.

Pros
  • Emma rates it 7.5 of 10 towards soft
  • 7-zone pocket springs under the soft layer
  • AirGrid top springs back, easy to turn over
  • 200-night trial
Cons
  • Emma steers heavier sleepers to firmer models
  • Only four UK sizes, no small double
  • Costs more than the Emma Original

Silentnight Mirapocket 2000 Deluxe Box Top Mattress

The Silentnight Mirapocket 2000 Deluxe Box Top is the traditional British option, a 39cm pocket-sprung mattress that Silentnight grades medium soft and describes as "a little softer than a medium for sleepers who need a little extra give". Its 2,000 zoned springs sit under the only hand-tufted box top in this ranking, and a double costs £990.

Emma Performance 30
Emma Performance 30Emma Performance 30Emma Performance 30
Deepest cushioning

Emma Performance 30

The Emma Performance 30 has the highest overall score of any mattress here, yet it ranks sixth because Emma publishes no soft grade for it. Emma treats height as the comfort dial, saying "taller means a plusher, more enveloping feel and support", and the 30cm model is its deepest, aimed at side sleepers with broader shoulders. At £1,709 for a double it costs well over the Original Elite, so it earns its place when you want depth of cushioning more than a softer surface.

Pros
  • Deepest Emma comfort stack at 30cm
  • Aimed at broad-shouldered side sleepers
  • AirGrid top sleeps cool
  • 200-night trial
Cons
  • No soft grade from Emma
  • Much dearer than the Original Elite
  • Base of the cover is dry clean only

Dunelm Rolled Memory Foam 800 Pocket Sprung Hybrid Mattress, 19cm

On a tight budget, the Dunelm Rolled Memory Foam 800 Pocket Sprung Hybrid is a 19cm rolled mattress that Dunelm grades Medium Soft and lists for side sleepers, with 800 pocket springs under memory foam and a quilted top. A double lists at £209, and Dunelm had 20% off at the time of writing (September 2026). The thin build gives a heavier sleeper far less to sink into than the 27cm to 39cm mattresses ranked above it.

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Choose the softness for your shoulders and the spring or foam core for your body weight. A soft top over zoned support is what keeps a side sleeper's spine level.”

A soft mattress suits you if you sleep mainly on your side, weigh less than average or wake with pressure at the shoulders and hips. The softness only helps when the layer beneath it still holds your spine level, and that is where most soft mattresses succeed or fail.

Soft feel and support are separate decisions

The comfort layer decides how far your shoulder and hip sink in. The core decides whether your spine stays straight while they do, and eight of the ten picks here put their soft layer on a spring unit.

The research on back pain points to the middle rather than to either extreme. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain published in The Lancet (Kovacs et al., 2003), people given medium-firm mattresses, rated 5.6 on a scale where 1 is firmest and 10 softest, had better outcomes for pain in bed (odds ratio 2.36) and for disability (2.10) than people on firm mattresses rated 2.3. A 2015 systematic review of 24 controlled trials in Sleep Health concluded that a medium-firm, self-adjusted mattress was optimal for comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment. If back pain rather than shoulder pressure is your main problem, medium-soft is as soft as you should go.

Match the softness to your weight

The National Bed Federation’s buying advice puts it simply: “As a general rule, the heavier you are, the firmer the tension you will need.” A soft top that cradles a light side sleeper can let a heavier sleeper’s hips drop below the line of the shoulders. Two makers here let you keep the soft upholstery and choose the spring tension separately. Woolroom sells the Standen in Soft, Regular and Firm, and Vispring the Devonshire in Soft, Medium, Firm and Extra Firm. Emma goes the other way and says stomach sleepers and people with a higher body weight are better served by its firmer Original than by the Original Elite. The NBF adds that partners whose weights differ by 3 stone (18kg) or more may need different mattresses, and if a soft top sounds wrong for you altogether, the firm and orthopaedic mattress comparisons cover the other end of the scale.

Read firmness labels with care

Every maker grades softness on its own scale, and sometimes on two. Emma’s page for the Original Elite calls it “medium soft, 2/5” in one place and rates it 7.5 on a scale from 1 (firm) to 10 (soft) in another. Silentnight calls its box top “medium soft”, TEMPUR sells the same PRO SmartCool in four feels, Bensons rates the Eve Hybrid Duo Plus plain “Soft”, and Simba sells the Hybrid Luxe as a plush feel while stating that it designs all its mattresses to feel “medium-firm”. The NBF warns that “there is no industry-wide standard to compare firmness ratings from one manufacturer to the other”. In a showroom, try the NBF’s hand test. Lie on your back and slide a hand into the hollow of your back; “if it’s a struggle to slide your hand in, then the bed is probably too soft.”

Depth, bedding and toppers

Soft mattresses are often deep. The Silentnight box top is 39cm and needs extra-deep fitted sheets, the Simba Hybrid Luxe is 31cm, and TEMPUR sells the same Soft feel at 21cm, 25cm (PRO Plus) and 30cm (PRO Luxe). If your current mattress still supports you and simply feels too hard, a soft mattress topper is the cheaper fix. If it sags, or it is more than seven to 10 years old, the age at which the NBF’s checklist suggests thinking about a replacement, a topper will not restore the support. Our mattress topper comparison covers that route, and the best mattresses of 2026 covers every firmness in one list.

Methodology

How we rate

This ranking sets out which mattresses sold in the UK give a genuinely soft or medium-soft feel without giving up the support underneath. We start from the maker’s or seller’s own feel grade, because it is the only softness figure published for every model, and cross-check it against the construction, since the National Bed Federation points out that there is no industry-wide standard for comparing firmness ratings between manufacturers.

What the score weights

  • Comfort and pressure relief (30%), judged on the depth and type of the layers above the core.
  • Support (25%), judged on zoning, spring count or foam build under the soft layer.
  • Temperature (15%), judged on covers, wool and airflow through springs or open-cell layers.
  • Value (30%), judged on the price of a double (135x190), trial length and guarantee.

Scores use one rubric across our whole catalogue. On this page the order also weights how clearly a model is graded soft, which is why the Emma Performance 30 ranks sixth despite the highest score, and the double price, which is why the Eve Hybrid Duo Plus and the Silentnight sit above the higher-scored Woolroom and Vispring, whose doubles cost two to nearly four times as much. Emma mattresses are part of our hands-on test programme; for the other brands we assess the maker’s specifications and our own per-size price checks. Prices, sizes, feels and stock were checked on each maker’s or stockist’s UK page on 28 September 2026.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best soft mattress in the UK?

The Emma Original Elite ranks first in our soft mattress comparison because Emma rates it medium soft, 7.5 on its own scale where 10 is softest, and puts that feel on 7-zone pocket springs, with a double at £1,159 and a 200-night trial.

Is a soft mattress bad for your back?

A soft mattress is not bad for your back if the core underneath keeps your spine level, but the research favours medium-firm for back pain. A 2003 Lancet trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain found medium-firm mattresses gave better pain and disability outcomes than firm ones, so back-pain sufferers should look at medium-soft rather than fully soft models.

Who should sleep on a soft mattress?

Side sleepers, lighter adults and people with shoulder or hip pressure benefit most from a soft mattress. The National Bed Federation advises that the heavier you are, the firmer the tension you need, so front sleepers and heavier sleepers are usually better on medium to firm.

What is the difference between a soft and a medium-soft mattress?

A medium-soft mattress sits one step firmer than soft, and Silentnight describes its medium-soft grade as "a little softer than a medium for sleepers who need a little extra give". There is no industry-wide standard for these grades, so compare them within one brand, for example Vispring's four tensions for the Devonshire, from Soft to Extra Firm.

How much does a soft double mattress cost?

In this ranking a soft or soft-leaning double (135x190) costs from £209 for the Dunelm Rolled Memory Foam 800 Pocket Sprung Hybrid to £2,749 for the handmade Vispring Devonshire, at prices checked in September 2026. The Eve Hybrid Duo Plus, at £729.99, is the cheapest double here with a fully Soft rating.

Should I buy a soft mattress topper instead of a new mattress?

A soft mattress topper is the cheaper choice when your mattress still supports you and only feels too hard. It will not fix sagging, and the National Bed Federation's checklist suggests considering a new mattress once yours is more than seven to 10 years old. Our topper comparison ranks the soft toppers worth considering.

Are soft mattresses suitable for heavier people?

Most soft mattresses are a poor match for heavier sleepers, because a soft top lets the hips sink too far. Emma itself says stomach sleepers and people with a higher body weight are better served by its firmer Original than by the Original Elite, so if you still want a soft surface, choose a model sold in several tensions, such as the Woolroom Standen or Vispring Devonshire, with a firmer spring, or see our mattresses for heavy people.

Do soft mattresses get softer over time?

Yes, the comfort layers of a soft mattress can compress and soften further with use, and natural fillings settle too. Rotating slows the uneven wear: Woolroom advises turning the Standen every three months after the first 12 weeks, and the all-wool Vispring Devonshire needs rotating as its wool settles. Once a mattress sags or passes seven to 10 years, the National Bed Federation's checklist suggests thinking about a replacement.
