The Woolroom Standen Wool Mattress is a 29 cm hand-tufted pocket sprung mattress with 1,400 calico-encased springs in a king size and fillings of British wool, cashmere, silk and cotton, made in the UK without foam or fire-retardant sprays. It is the entry model of Woolroom’s Artisan Collection, from £2,219 in a double at the regular price, with a 15-year guarantee.

Construction

According to the Standen product page, the springs are hand-nested and tied, two rows of hand side-stitching reinforce the edges, and hand tufting holds the natural layers in place. That matches the National Bed Federation’s description in its mattress buying guide of better-quality pocket springs, which are encased in calico, hand-nested in a honeycomb pattern and centre-tied. The NBF gives typical pocket spring counts of 600-800 up to 2,500, so 1,400 in a king sits in the middle of that range.

Living with a tufted wool mattress

Natural fillings settle. Woolroom asks you to turn and rotate the Standen regularly for the first 12 weeks and every three months after that, and the NBF’s care guide calls impression marks a normal characteristic of quality mattresses that regular rotating keeps to a minimum. Woolroom’s mattress warranty terms cover settlement deeper than 2.5 cm that is not caused by misuse. At 40 kg in a double, turning it is a job for two people.

The trial needs reading closely. The Standen comes with a 100-night sleep trial only when you buy it with a Woolroom Deluxe or Organic Washable protector; without one, there is no trial. Delivery is free by a two-person team to the room of your choice up to the first floor, including unpacking and removal of packaging.

We would pick the Standen for a sleeper who runs warm, wants natural fibres throughout and prefers a traditional sprung feel, choosing Soft or Regular for side sleeping. It is not the right buy if you want a low-maintenance mattress you never need to turn.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Standen suits you if you want a traditional hand-tufted mattress with natural fillings and do not mind turning it every three months. At £2,219 for a double, with a trial that only applies when you add a Woolroom protector, it is not a low-risk first purchase.”
