Vispring does not sell online, so these are Land of Beds’ prices; it also lists small single, long single, European king and small emperor sizes. Land of Beds shows a higher RRP beside each price with no end date or countdown, so we treat its street price as the regular price.

Why the price is so high

The Devonshire’s price reflects hand labour and an all-wool filling. Vispring’s history goes back to the Marshall Sanitary Mattress Company, founded in London in 1901 to bring James Marshall’s pocket-spring mattress, invented in 1899, to Britain, and almost 200 craftspeople now build the beds by hand in Plymouth.

Who should buy a soft wool mattress?

A soft wool mattress like the Devonshire suits side sleepers who want shoulders and hips to sink in, and anyone who dislikes the heat and slow feel of memory foam, because wool, as Vispring puts it, breathes and draws away moisture. The softness is also the limit. In a Lancet trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain (Kovacs et al., 2003), medium-firm mattresses outperformed firm ones; the trial did not include soft mattresses, so there is no evidence either way for one this soft. The Devonshire’s answer is a firmer spring tension underneath the soft wool, which we would choose for heavier sleepers and couples. Deep wool fillings also settle into body impressions, so rotate the mattress regularly.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Devonshire is our pick in the Vispring range for side sleepers and anyone who wants a soft, enveloping bed with no foam, backed by a 30-year guarantee. If you are heavier or share the bed, pair it with a medium or firm spring tension, and look elsewhere if you sleep on your front.”
