Comparison

Best double mattresses

A UK double mattress measures 135 x 190cm, which leaves each of two sleepers 67.5cm of width, so the right double keeps one partner's movement on their own side, has edges you can use and a firmness that suits both bodies. This ranking compares hybrid, memory foam and traditional pocket-sprung doubles on those points, plus depth, trial, guarantee and the price of the double size itself. If you are torn between a small double, a double and a king, the size table in the buying guide shows how much room each one gives you.

Best double mattresses: top pick in detail

Emma Original Pro
Emma Original ProEmma Original Pro
Top pick

Emma Original Pro

The Emma Original Pro is the double we recommend to most couples, a 27cm hybrid with seven-zone pocket springs that costs £799 as a double. In our own test it felt firmer than Emma's 3 out of 5 rating, stayed cool through summer nights and held a firm edge, which counts when each sleeper has 67.5cm. The 200-night trial covers the one thing a spec sheet cannot settle, whether it suits both of you.

Pros
  • Seven-zone pocket springs with a firm edge
  • Stayed cool for us, even in summer
  • Side handles for turning a 27cm double
  • 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee
Cons
  • Firmer than Emma's 3 out of 5 rating
  • A bit firm for a partner under about 60kg
  • No layer thicknesses published

Origin Hybrid

The Origin Hybrid costs £410 as a double and comes with a 15-year warranty and a 200-night trial. Five-zone pocket springs sit under a zip-off pillow top whose cover washes at 40°C, and Origin puts the feel at 6 to 7 out of 10, better for back and front sleepers than for light side sleepers. It outscores the OTTY above it but sits fourth, because our top three places go to brands in the Awin affiliate network we use and Origin runs its own affiliate scheme outside it.

Pros
  • 15-year warranty and 200-night trial
  • Zip-off cover washes at 40°C
  • Made in the UK
Cons
  • Firmer than light side sleepers may like
  • Five spring zones, not seven

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“On a double, width is the one thing you cannot change after delivery, so choose the construction that keeps your partner's turns on their own side of the bed. If the room and budget allow a king, those extra 15cm of width are worth more than any upgrade in foam.”

Is a double wide enough for two?

A double fits two adults, but with little to spare. The National Bed Federation’s UK size guide puts a standard double at 135 x 190cm and spells out what that leaves a couple:

“The majority of British couples still sleep in a standard double size bed which is only 135cm (4’6”) wide. This provides each user with just 67.5cm or about 2’3” of space each which is the same as we give a baby in a cot!”

The NBF’s showroom check is simple. Lie side by side on your backs with your hands behind your heads, and if your elbows touch, you need more width. The NBF also advises a mattress at least 10cm longer than the tallest sleeper, so anyone over 180cm (5ft11in) is better off on a 200cm king, ranked in our king size and super king comparisons.

UK size Size (cm) Imperial Width each if two share Tallest sleeper it suits (NBF 10cm rule)
Small double 120 x 190 4ft x 6ft3in 60cm 180cm
Double 135 x 190 4ft6in x 6ft3in 67.5cm 180cm
King 150 x 200 5ft x 6ft6in 75cm 190cm
Super king 180 x 200 6ft x 6ft6in 90cm 190cm

Partner movement and the edges

On a shared double, movement is the main thing a mattress has to contain. In a study of 46 couples monitored for eight nights with wrist actimetry, Pankhurst and Horne (Sleep, 1994) found that about a third of sleep movements happened in both partners within the same 30-second window, and women reported being disturbed by their partner more often than men did. The Sleep Charity names partner disturbance as one of the top reasons people struggle to sleep well.

Pocket springs compress one by one, and eight of the ten doubles below are built on them. The Nectar Classic Memory Foam and the TEMPUR EASE 20 have no springs at all, so less bounce crosses the bed, at the cost of a slower feel when you turn over. With 67.5cm each nobody sleeps far from the side, which is why edges count. The DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid has a reinforced-edge spring unit, the Simba Hybrid Pro a steel SupportCore base, and the Emma Original Pro’s edge held when we sat on it in our test.

One firmness for two bodies

Medium-firm is the safest choice when two different people share one surface. In a randomised, double-blind trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain, reported in The Lancet by Kovacs and colleagues in 2003, the group given medium-firm mattresses did better after 90 days than the group on firm ones, with an odds ratio of 2.36 for pain in bed and 2.10 for disability. A 2015 systematic review of 24 controlled trials in Sleep Health (Radwan and colleagues) came to a similar view, rating a medium-firm mattress that is custom inflated to the sleeper as optimal for comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment.

Every double here is sold as medium or medium-firm, but the makers’ scales differ. OTTY rates its hybrid 7 out of 10, Origin 6 to 7, Nectar 6.5 and DreamCloud 6, DUSK calls the 4000 medium to firm, and Emma rates the Original Pro 3 (medium) out of 5, although it felt firmer than that in our own test. If one partner is much heavier or wants a harder bed, the Soak&Sleep Wool 2000 comes in Firm for the same double price as its Medium/Firm version.

Depth, bedding and delivery

Depth in this ranking runs from 20cm on the TEMPUR EASE 20 to 31cm on the DUSK Memory Foam 4000, and anything from 28cm up needs fitted sheets with deep pockets. TEMPUR delivers the EASE 20 the next working day, Silentnight makes the Comfort Breathe to order within 14 days, and Soak&Sleep quotes four to seven weeks.

Trial, guarantee and cost per night

Trials run from Silentnight’s 60-night comfort exchange to 365 nights at Nectar and DreamCloud. Guarantees run from one year on the DUSK Memory Foam 4000 to 15 years at Origin and the lifetime Forever Warranty at Nectar and DreamCloud, so on the DUSK the 100-night trial is the real safeguard. For one sleeper see our single mattress ranking, and for every size our best mattresses ranking.

Methodology

How we rate

Every mattress here is ranked on how it serves two people on a 135 x 190cm UK double, the size set out in the National Bed Federation’s UK size guide. Our overall score weights comfort at 30%, support at 25%, temperature at 15% and value at 30%. On this page value means the price of the double itself, not the single that brands advertise, read together with the trial and the guarantee. Support includes the edge build and the spring unit, because a sleeper with 67.5cm of width is never far from the side. Firmness comes from each maker’s own scale and is checked against the clinical evidence for medium-firm described in the buying guide.

Double prices, sizes and stock were read from each maker’s UK shop on 28 September 2026, and the price in each summary updates from our product records when a price changes. The Emma Original Pro has been tested hands-on by our team, and its score reflects that test. The top three places go to brands that sell through Awin, the affiliate network we use, which can pay us a commission; below them the order follows the score. The one exception is the Origin Hybrid at number four, which outscores the OTTY at number three and says why on its card.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size is a double mattress in the UK?

A UK double mattress is 135 x 190cm, or 4ft6in x 6ft3in, according to the National Bed Federation size guide. A European double is larger at 140 x 200cm, so check the size before ordering from a range that lists both.

Is a double mattress big enough for two adults?

A double fits two adults, but each gets only 67.5cm of width, which the National Bed Federation compares to the space a baby has in a cot. If your elbows touch when you both lie on your backs with your hands behind your heads, a 150 x 200cm king gives each of you 75cm and adds 10cm of length. The Emma Original Pro, for example, costs £799 as a double and £919 as a king, and our king size mattress comparison ranks the wider option.

What is the difference between a small double and a double mattress?

A small double is 120 x 190cm, 15cm narrower than a 135 x 190cm double and the same length, which leaves two sleepers 60cm each instead of 67.5cm. At the time of writing the Emma Original Pro costs £709 as a small double and £799 as a double.

How much should I pay for a good double mattress?

At the time of writing, six of the ten doubles in this ranking cost between £400 and £800, and the full range runs from £389 for the DUSK Memory Foam 4000 to £1,299 for the Simba Hybrid Pro. Spread over its life the difference is small, because the NBF calculates that every £100 spent on a bed costs 3.9p a night over seven years.

Can I buy a double bed and mattress separately?

Yes, any 135 x 190cm mattress in this ranking fits a UK double divan or bed frame, so a separate purchase lets you pick the mattress on its own merits. For the traditional sprung feel of a divan set, the Silentnight Comfort Breathe 1000 Pocket and the Soak&Sleep Wool 2000 cost £399 and £725 as doubles.

Do I need a mattress topper on a double mattress?

A new double mattress should not need a topper. A topper changes the feel of an older 135 x 190cm mattress that still supports you, softening one that has become too firm, but it cannot fix a sagging core, and our double mattress topper comparison ranks the current double toppers.

What firmness should a double mattress be for a couple?

Medium-firm is the best starting point for most couples, and every double here is sold as medium or medium-firm. In a 2003 trial of 313 adults with low-back pain published in The Lancet, medium-firm mattresses did better than firm ones on pain in bed and disability after 90 days. If one partner wants more support, the Soak&Sleep Wool 2000 comes in Firm at the same double price.

How often should you replace a double mattress?

Check a double mattress for replacement once it is seven to 10 years old, the age at which The Sleep Charity and Bed Advice UK suggest asking the question. Guarantees in this ranking run from one year on the DUSK Memory Foam 4000 to 15 years on the Origin Hybrid, and Nectar and DreamCloud add a lifetime Forever Warranty.
