Comparison

Best medium-firm mattresses

A medium-firm mattress is the safest starting point for most adults, because it keeps the spine level when you lie on your back and still gives at the shoulder and hip when you turn on your side, and controlled trials on back pain favour it over firm. The difficulty is that every UK brand grades firmness on its own scale, so one maker's medium can feel firmer than another's medium-firm. This ranking compares medium and medium-firm mattresses by the maker's own grade, the support underneath, the trial terms and the price of a double, so you can match one to your weight and the way you sleep.

Best overall

Emma Original Pro

Zoned support, a cooling top layer and a responsive feel make the Emma Original Pro the mattress we would point most sleepers to first. In our hands-on test its seven-zone pocket springs kept the hips level whether we lay on our back or front, and the graphite-infused top foam stayed cool through a summer of use. Emma grades it medium (3 of 5); on our test bed it felt close to medium-firm.

A double costs £799, more than most picks here, but it is the only one under £1,000 that combines seven spring zones with a graphite cooling layer, and Emma backs it with a 200-night trial and a 10-year guarantee.

Pros
  • Responsive feel with a slight bounce
  • Seven spring zones keep the hips level
  • Stayed cool through a summer in our test
  • Side handles on a 27cm mattress
Cons
  • Emma publishes no layer thicknesses
  • Heavy to move, 29.4kg in a double

Origin Hybrid

The Origin Hybrid brings a zoned spring mattress with a removable pillow top down to £410 for a double, less than any other pick here except the IKEA. Five-zone pocket springs sit under gel-infused foam, and the pillow top's cover zips off and washes at 40°C.

Origin's own grade puts it on the firm side of the band, which suits back sleepers in particular. The 15-year warranty is the longest fixed term on this page.

Pros
  • Zip-off pillow top, washable at 40°C
  • Lowest double price after the IKEA
  • Gel-infused foam over the springs
  • 15-year warranty
Cons
  • No Emperor size
  • Old-mattress disposal costs £54

Recommended for couples

Simba Hybrid Pro Mattress

Two people sharing a bed get the most out of the Simba Hybrid Pro. Its steel spring base firms the edges, so neither of you is pushed towards the middle, and Simba says the titanium microsprings above it respond separately to each movement, up to 4,800 springs in all.

Simba describes the feel as medium-firm and tops the springs with graphite-infused foam and British wool. The catch is the price, £1,299 for a double at the regular rate, which makes it worth it mainly for two sleepers who want firm edges.

Pros
  • Up to 4,800 springs in all
  • Steel base firms the edges
  • British wool comfort layer
  • Aerocoil springs made in Leeds
Cons
  • Dearest hybrid double in this ranking
  • HeatRelease cover upgrade costs extra

Emma Original

Best mid-price pick

Emma Original

For noticeably less than the Pro, the Emma Original keeps most of what we liked in our test. Its memory foam gives as soon as you lie down, five-zone pocket springs stopped the middle from dipping, and a partner turning over barely registered on the other side.

At £529 for a double, it is the Emma to choose if you can do without the Pro's cooling layer.

Pros
  • Memory foam gives at shoulder and hip
  • Little partner movement in our test
  • Five zones kept the centre level
  • Wraparound foam edge for sitting
Cons
  • No dedicated cooling layer, unlike the Pro
  • Five spring zones to the Pro's seven

TEMPUR PRO SmartCool
TEMPUR PRO SmartCoolTEMPUR PRO SmartCoolTEMPUR PRO SmartCool
Best all-foam pick

TEMPUR PRO SmartCool

Pressure relief without springs is what the TEMPUR PRO SmartCool offers, and it is the only all-foam mattress in this ranking. Order the Medium Firm version, one of four feels TEMPUR sells at one price, which has 3cm of TEMPUR Advanced Material and 5cm of support foam over a 13cm base.

TEMPUR rates it for about 150kg per side, so heavier sleepers who like the close, slow give of foam are covered. The hard part is paying £2,299 for a double, nearly three times the Emma Original Pro, with a trial that only allows a return after 60 nights.

Pros
  • 3cm Advanced Material for pressure relief
  • About 150kg capacity per side
  • Four feels at one price
  • 11 sizes, 75x200 to 200x200
Cons
  • Double costs nearly three times the top pick
  • Return only after 60 nights
  • Dense foam responds more slowly than springs

Pros
  • Up to 2,000 springs, each 16cm tall
  • Nine sizes, Emperor included

Cons
  • Cover is dry clean only

Nectar Classic Hybrid Mattress
Nectar Classic Hybrid MattressNectar Classic Hybrid MattressNectar Classic Hybrid Mattress
Best for a softer medium feel

Nectar Classic Hybrid Mattress

If medium-firm sounds too firm, the Nectar Classic Hybrid sits a step softer, as a true medium. Memory foam sits over a 15cm unit of individually wrapped pocket springs, which add a lift that a foam core lacks, and a single weighs 19kg, so it is easy to rotate on your own.

It is one of the cheaper doubles here at £499, which makes it the easiest way to try a true medium before committing to anything firmer.

Pros
  • Spring bounce under a memory foam top
  • Five UK sizes, small double included
  • Cheaper double than most hybrids here
  • CertiPUR-certified foams
Cons
  • No zoning for extra support under the hips
  • Less motion isolation than all-foam models

Silentnight Comfort Breathe 1200 Pocket

Best traditional pocket-sprung pick

Silentnight Comfort Breathe 1200 Pocket

For a traditional build with no memory foam, the Silentnight Comfort Breathe 1200 Pocket is the pick. Silentnight makes it to order in the UK, with 1,200 Mirapocket springs under a breathable fibre layer and a mesh side border that lets air through, which suits warm sleepers who dislike the feel of foam.

Its double price of £499 is reasonable, but the terms are the weakest here, with a 60-night comfort exchange instead of a refund and a 5-year guarantee. If you like the traditional build but want more springs or a different filling, Silentnight's other models are compared in our guide to the Silentnight range.

Pros
  • 1,200 Mirapocket springs, no memory foam
  • Mesh border for airflow
  • Made to order in the UK
  • All five UK sizes
Cons
  • 60-night exchange, no refund
  • 5-year guarantee

Best budget pick

IKEA Valevåg Pocket Sprung Mattress

At £179 for a double, the IKEA Valevåg is the cheapest way into a zoned pocket sprung mattress at this firmness. IKEA sells a medium-firm and a firm version at the same price, so check which one is in your basket.

Five comfort zones sit under foam and wadding in a 24cm mattress with a 10-year guarantee. The low price is what makes it the sensible choice for a tight budget or a spare room that sees occasional use, as long as you can live with a cover that does not come off for washing and a 365-night policy that only lets you exchange.

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Start at medium-firm, and choose a mattress whose trial lets you change your mind after a few weeks of sleeping on it.”

How to read a firmness scale

There is no shared firmness scale for mattresses in the UK. The National Bed Federation’s buying advice puts it plainly: “Remember, there is no industry-wide standard to compare firmness ratings from one manufacturer to the other.” The mattresses in this ranking show why that matters. Emma grades on 1 to 5 and calls the Original a 4 (medium firm) and the Original Pro a 3 (medium). Origin puts its Hybrid at 6 to 7 out of 10, OTTY its Original Hybrid at 7, DreamCloud the Luxury Hybrid at 6 (“Medium / Medium-Firm”) and Nectar the Classic Hybrid at 5. Read medium as the softer half of the band and medium-firm as the firmer half, and compare numbers only within one brand’s range.

Why medium-firm is the usual starting point

The case for medium-firm comes from back-pain research, and it is stronger than the case for firm. In a randomised, double-blind trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain, Kovacs and colleagues (The Lancet, 2003) gave one group medium-firm mattresses (5.6 on the European Hs scale, where 1 is the firmest and 10 the softest) and the other firm ones (2.3). After 90 days the medium-firm group had better outcomes for pain in bed and for disability, and the authors concluded that “a mattress of medium firmness improves pain and disability among patients with chronic non-specific low-back pain.”

Two later reviews point the same way. A 2015 systematic review of 24 controlled trials in Sleep Health found a medium-firm, self-adjusted mattress optimal for sleep comfort, quality and spinal alignment, and a 2021 review of 39 studies in the Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology concluded that a medium-firm mattress promotes comfort, sleep quality and alignment of the spine. Most of that evidence comes from people with back pain, so for a sleeper without it medium-firm is a sensible default, not a rule. If pain is why you are shopping, the mattresses we recommend for back pain are compared separately.

Weight, sleeping position and two sleepers

Your weight moves the target more than anything else. The NBF’s general rule is that the heavier you are, the firmer the tension you need, and it suggests a simple check on any mattress you can lie on: slide a hand into the hollow of your back. If it slides in too easily the mattress may be too hard, if it is a struggle it is probably too soft, and a little resistance suggests it is about right.

  • Light side sleepers may not press far enough into a medium-firm hybrid to feel its comfort layers. A medium such as the Nectar Classic Hybrid, or one of the soft and medium-soft mattresses we rank, is the better start.
  • Back and front sleepers of average weight are who medium-firm suits best, because it stops the hips sinking below the line of the spine.
  • Heavier back and front sleepers compress the comfort layers further and often need the support of a firm mattress.
  • Couples usually find medium-firm the easiest compromise. Where one partner is much heavier, two single mattresses zipped together let each side have its own tension.

Refund trial or exchange

Because firmness is personal, the trial is your real test. Emma, Origin and Simba give 200 nights, OTTY 100, and DreamCloud and Nectar a full year. TEMPUR allows 100 nights but asks you to sleep on the mattress for at least 60 before returning it. Silentnight and IKEA only exchange, Silentnight for 60 nights and IKEA for 365, so you can swap the mattress for another but not get your money back. That difference matters more on this page than on most, because the step between medium and medium-firm is exactly the kind of judgement you can only make after a few weeks of sleeping on it.

Methodology

How we rate

Every mattress here is graded medium or medium-firm by the company that sells it. We use each maker’s own grade, except where our hands-on test placed a mattress differently, as with the Emma Original Pro, which Emma grades medium and we found close to medium-firm. Within that band we compare what does the supporting: the spring unit and its zoning, or the foam core on the one all-foam pick, the depth, and how the comfort layers sit on top. Trial terms count towards value, because choosing a firmness is a judgement about how a mattress suits your body, and a refund trial lets you check that judgement at home. An exchange-only or shorter trial counts for less.

The overall score weights comfort at 30%, support at 25%, temperature at 15% and value at 30%, with a small adjustment for the brand’s UK track record, and value is judged on the 135x190 double. The ranking follows that score. Prices, sizes and stock were checked on 4 October 2026 in each maker’s UK shop or at IKEA.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best medium-firm mattress in the UK?

The Emma Original Pro is our top pick in the medium to medium-firm band for most UK sleepers, and the one we would choose for a back or front sleeper of average weight who runs warm. On a tighter budget, the Origin Hybrid is the value alternative at £410 for a double.

What is the difference between a medium and a medium-firm mattress?

Medium-firm is one step firmer than medium, with more support under the hips and less sink at the surface, and it is the band the back-pain trials favour. In this ranking the Nectar Classic Hybrid is graded medium by its maker and the Origin Hybrid medium-firm, so lying on one of each is the quickest way to feel the difference.

Is a medium-firm mattress good for back pain?

Yes, medium-firm is the firmness with the best evidence for chronic low-back pain. In a 2003 trial of 313 adults published in The Lancet, people given medium-firm mattresses had better outcomes for pain in bed and disability after 90 days than those given firm ones.

Who should not buy a medium-firm mattress?

Light side sleepers and heavier back or front sleepers are the two groups most likely to want something else. A lighter side sleeper may find that a medium-firm mattress gives too little at the shoulder and hip, so a soft or medium-soft mattress is a better start, while heavier bodies sink further and may need a firm one.

Is a medium-firm mattress good for couples?

Usually, because medium-firm is the compromise most couples can share. Pocket springs and firm edges help most, and of the picks here the Emma Original kept movement from a partner to a minimum in our test while the Simba Hybrid Pro has a steel spring base along the sides. Where one of you is much heavier, two single mattresses zipped together let each side have its own tension.

Can a firm topper or a support board fix a mattress that feels too soft?

A firm topper changes how the surface of a sound mattress feels, and a support board under the mattress stops it dipping into a sagging base, but neither restores a mattress whose own springs or foam have worn. If yours has dipped, a new mattress such as the IKEA Valevåg at £179 for a double does more than either; for a sound but soft one, see our firm mattress topper comparison.

How much does a good medium-firm double mattress cost in the UK?

At the time of writing (October 2026), the doubles in this ranking run from £179 for the IKEA Valevåg to £2,299 for the TEMPUR PRO SmartCool. The Emma Original, Nectar, DreamCloud and OTTY doubles all sit between £450 and £650. The best mattresses of 2026 are ranked across every firmness and budget in our main guide.
