Comparison

Best mattress toppers

The best mattress topper depends on what is wrong with your bed now. Memory foam softens a mattress that feels too hard and eases pressure on shoulders and hips, a spring hybrid adds lift to one that feels flat, and wool, hollowfibre or down change how warm the surface sleeps. This ranking compares UK toppers from single to super king by depth, filling, washability, return terms and the price in your size, and it says plainly when a new mattress is the better buy.

Top pick

Emma Original Pro Topper

The Emma Original Pro Topper is our first choice for softening a mattress that feels too firm, with 9cm of foam under a graphite-infused ThermoSync layer. In our hands-on test it supported and sprang back rather than hugging, and heat never built up. A double costs £369 with a 100-night trial on Emma's trial page, though anyone who wants the cocooning feel of memory foam, or weighs over 100kg, should look further down.

Pros
  • 9cm, deep enough to change the bed
  • Graphite foam stayed cool in our test
  • Springs back, easy to turn over
  • 100-night trial, cover washes at 40°C
Cons
  • No memory foam, so no hug
  • A little soft above about 100kg
  • Product FAQ still says 30 nights, 2 years

UK-made pick

Simba Hybrid Mattress Topper

The Simba Hybrid Mattress Topper comes with a 200-night home trial, the longest in this ranking, and is made in the UK with up to 1,900 Aerocoil springs under Simbatex foam. It scores slightly higher than the Panda Hybrid in our ratings but sits below it, because the Panda won Expert Reviews' Best Mattress Topper award for 2026, is 1cm deeper at 7.5cm and costs less at full price, £249.95 against £299 for a single. If a long trial matters more to you than the price gap, choose the Simba.

  • Up to 1,900 Aerocoil springs
  • Cover machine washes at 40°C

Emma Original Topper

Choose the Emma Original Topper if you cannot decide between softer and firmer, since its 6cm of foam flips between a soft Airgocell side and a firmer HRX side. Pros
  • Reversible soft and firmer sides
  • 100-night trial on Emma's trial page
  • Anti-slip underside stays put
  • Cover washes at 40°C
Cons
  • No cooling layer

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Buy a topper to change how a sound mattress feels, not to rescue one that sags. If you can see a dip where you sleep when the bed is empty, spend the money on a new mattress instead.”

Check whether a topper can fix your bed

A topper changes how the surface of a bed feels; it does not restore support a mattress has lost, so if yours already sags or has softened a lot over time, a new mattress is usually the better buy. National Bed Federation research reported in 2019 put the average UK mattress replacement cycle at 6.9 years, and the NBF advises replacing a mattress every seven to eight years, by which time it has seen around 20,000 hours of use (Furniture News, April 2019). A younger mattress that simply feels too hard is where a topper earns its price. If yours is older and dips where you lie, look at the best mattresses of 2026 instead.

Match the filling to the problem

Memory foam moulds around shoulders and hips, which suits side sleepers on a firm mattress, though dense foam can feel warm. The graphite-infused foam of the Emma Original Pro pushes back instead of hugging, and it stayed cool in our hands-on test. Foam over micro-springs, as in the Panda Hybrid Bamboo and the Simba Hybrid, adds lift to a mattress that feels flat and makes turning over easier. Dormeo’s Octaspring toppers get a similar lift from foam springs, compared in our Dormeo topper ranking. Wool, hollowfibre and feather and down trade support for loft, so the four fibre toppers here score 6.2 to 6.6 out of 10 for support in our ratings, against 7.6 to 8.6 for the six foams and hybrids.

Heat matters. A review of sleep research in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno, 2012) found that, where bedding and clothing are used, heat exposure increases wakefulness and reduces slow-wave and REM sleep. For back pain, in a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain published in The Lancet (Kovacs et al., 2003), people given medium-firm mattresses (5.6 on the European H(s) scale, where 1 is firmest and 10 softest) had better results for pain in bed, pain on rising and disability after 90 days than people given firm ones (2.3). Softening an over-firm mattress towards medium-firm is a reasonable step, not a treatment.

Depth, sizes and fitting

Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation, sets a clear minimum for depth: “aim for one that’s at least 5 cm (2 inches) deep. Anything thinner is unlikely to make a noticeable difference in comfort.” Eight of the ten toppers ranked here meet it. The Dorma Full Forever starts at 3cm, so buy its 6cm version if you want a real change, and the Woolroom Deluxe holds 4 to 5cm of wool. Measure mattress plus topper before you buy fitted sheets. Woolroom’s straps fit mattresses up to 35cm deep, Dorma’s up to 30cm. For spills, add one of the mattress protectors we rank.

For a single bed, buy the UK single (90x190) unless your mattress is the longer EU single (90x200), which Panda and Woolroom also sell. None of the ten sellers lists a UK small single (75x190) for these toppers, so a narrow bunk or daybed needs a topper made in that size. The TEMPUR ONE starts at a double, and the Soak&Sleep small double was out of stock when we checked on 28 September 2026. See also our memory foam, latex and bamboo topper rankings and the double, king size and super king topper comparisons.

Price and returns

Filling sets the price more than depth. At full price a double costs £46 in hollowfibre, £139.95 in Panda memory foam, £339.95 with micro-springs and £549 from TEMPUR. Many retailers treat toppers as sealed hygiene goods, and regulation 28(3)(a) of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 ends the right to cancel an online order for sealed goods “not suitable for return due to health protection or hygiene reasons” once they are unsealed after delivery. Short of a fault, a brand trial is the only way to send back a topper you have slept on. Simba offers 200 nights and Emma lists 100, Panda (bought direct), TEMPUR and Woolroom give 30, and Silentnight, Soak&Sleep and Dunelm (for Dorma) take back unused toppers only.

Methodology

How we rate

Every topper here is scored on the same five axes, and the overall mark weights comfort at 30%, support at 25%, temperature at 15% and value at 30%. For a topper, comfort means how much the layer changes the feel of the mattress underneath (depth, filling, and foam density where the maker publishes it), support means whether it keeps its shape instead of bottoming out, and value sets the price in each UK size against the trial, guarantee and care you get for it. Depth is judged against the 5cm minimum recommended by Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation’s consumer site.

Specifications, sizes, stock and per-size prices come from each seller’s own UK product page and were checked on 28 September 2026. Published independent results count towards the order: the Expert Reviews Sleep Awards 2026 named the Panda Hybrid Bamboo its best mattress topper and the Dorma Full Forever its best-value one. The Emma Original Pro Topper has also been through our own hands-on test, on a mattress and on a sofa bed.

Two further rules shape the list. A topper must be in stock at its UK seller in at least a double, and a topper sold without a trial loses value points, because many retailers treat toppers as sealed hygiene goods that go back only unused or faulty. Where a product with a higher overall score sits below a lower one, its card says why, usually price per size or an independent award.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best mattress topper in the UK?

The Emma Original Pro Topper is our top pick for most people, a 9cm foam topper with a graphite-infused cooling layer that supported well and stayed cool in our hands-on test, at £259 for a single and £369 for a double. If your mattress feels flat rather than hard, the Panda Hybrid Bamboo Mattress Topper adds micro-springs for more lift, and Expert Reviews named it Sleep Product of the Year in its 2026 Sleep Awards.

What is the best single mattress topper?

For a UK single (90x190), the Panda Bamboo Mattress Topper gives you 5cm of gel-infused memory foam for £99.95, and the Silentnight Airmax 1000 Extra Deep is the cheapest single in this ranking at £42 full price. The TEMPUR ONE is not sold in a single, and none of the ten is listed in a UK small single (75x190), so a 2ft6 bed needs a topper made in that size.

How thick should a mattress topper be?

A mattress topper should be at least 5cm thick, the minimum that Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation's consumer site, recommends for a noticeable difference in comfort. The 7.5cm Panda Hybrid Bamboo and the 9cm Emma Original Pro suit side sleepers on a hard mattress, and the thickest topper here is the 10cm Silentnight Airmax 1000 Extra Deep, though its hollowfibre compresses once you lie on it and needs regular shaking out, a trade-off our 10cm mattress topper ranking compares across thick toppers.

Can a mattress topper make a soft mattress firmer?

Only slightly. A topper follows the shape of the mattress underneath, so the medium-firm spring hybrids in this ranking, the Panda Hybrid Bamboo and the Simba Hybrid, add some surface support but cannot firm up a mattress that has softened with wear. For that case a new mattress is the better buy, and for a sound mattress our firm mattress topper ranking lists the firmest options.

Which mattress topper is best for hot sleepers?

The Emma Original Pro Topper is our pick for hot sleepers who want foam, because heat never built up on its graphite-infused ThermoSync layer in our hands-on test. For natural fibres choose the Woolroom Deluxe Wool Mattress Topper, with 1,000gsm of British wool, and on a budget the Silentnight Airmax 1000 Extra Deep, which has air-mesh side walls, and our cooling mattress topper ranking compares more options for hot sleepers.

Is a mattress topper worth it, or should I buy a new mattress?

A topper is worth it on a mattress that is sound but too firm, and poor value on one that sags. National Bed Federation research reported in 2019 put the average UK replacement cycle at 6.9 years, so a mattress older than that with visible dips is usually due for replacement rather than a topper.

Can you return a mattress topper?

Usually only if it is unused or faulty, because many retailers treat toppers as sealed hygiene goods, and under regulation 28(3)(a) of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 the right to cancel ends once such goods are unsealed after delivery. The exception is a brand trial: 200 nights on the Simba Hybrid Mattress Topper, 100 nights listed for Emma's toppers, and 30 nights on Panda toppers bought direct, the Woolroom Deluxe and the TEMPUR ONE, which TEMPUR asks you to keep for at least 14 nights.

Do mattress toppers help with back pain?

A topper can help if your mattress is too firm, because the best trial evidence favours medium-firm over firm surfaces. In a 2003 Lancet trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain, those given medium-firm mattresses had better results for pain in bed, pain on rising and disability after 90 days than those given firm ones. The NHS advises seeing a GP if back pain does not improve after treating it at home for a few weeks.
