“Decide how much sink you want before you choose a brand, because memory foam directly under the cover gives the classic slow hug while the same foam buried under springier layers mainly adds pressure relief. If you run warm, favour pocket springs or a cooling cover and give yourself a trial of 100 nights or more.”

Depths and firmness are the makers’ figures, checked on 28 September 2026.
Where the memory foam sits changes the feel
A memory foam mattress is any mattress whose comfort layer is visco-elastic foam, a material that softens with body heat and moulds slowly to your shape. How much slow sink you feel depends on the layer order. The Emma Original, Ergoflex 5G, both TEMPUR models, the Dormeo Octasmart Plus and the Silentnight Memory 1000 Pocket put memory foam at or near the top, so the contour is immediate. Nectar, Eve and the Emma Original Classic lay a springier foam above it. All-foam cores absorb a partner’s movement best, while pocket springs move more air and make turning over easier. Our best foam mattresses ranking covers foams without the slow response.
How warm memory foam sleeps
Memory foam softens with body heat, and a dense layer right under you holds that warmth, so if you run hot a hybrid mattress is the safer choice. The layout makes the difference. Pocket springs under the Emma Original and the Silentnight Memory 1000 Pocket move air through the core, the Silentnight adds breathable borders, and Dormeo’s hollow Octasprings do a similar job inside a foam build. A cooling cover such as TEMPUR’s SmartCool changes the first touch, while the Ergoflex 5G puts a 5cm airflow layer under its memory foam. Emma’s Original Pro adds graphite-infused foam too, but its memory foam sits under two other foams, so we leave it out.
Firmness and back pain
Medium-firm is the band with the best evidence. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain published in The Lancet (Kovacs et al., 2003), people given a medium-firm mattress had better outcomes after 90 days than those on a firm one, for pain in bed (odds ratio 2.36) and disability (2.10). A 2021 review of 39 studies in the Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (Caggiari et al.) concluded that a medium-firm mattress promotes comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment. If you want a firm memory foam mattress, TEMPUR sells the PRO SmartCool in a firm feel at the same price, Nectar rates its Classic 6.5 out of 10 against the Premier’s 6, and our best firm mattresses ranking covers firmer builds of every type.
Trial length, lifespan and safety
Memory foam feels unlike springs, so if it is your first, choose a brand with a longer sleep trial. Trials here run from 30 days at Ergoflex, which asks for at least 21 days of use first, to 365 nights at Nectar. Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation, says sleep experts recommend replacing a mattress every seven years, after more than 20,000 hours of use.
For the foam itself, look for CertiPUR. Under the scheme run by the European foam association EUROPUR, label holders’ foams are tested every year by independent laboratories. Ergoflex and Nectar both state CertiPUR-certified foam on their product pages.
Check fire safety too, above all on cheap boxed foam from marketplaces. In the Project Phoenix study published in May 2026, the National Bed Federation and the European Bedding Industries Association tested 101 mattresses on sale in the UK, and 65% of those imported from outside the UK and EU failed the required fire safety standards. Ergoflex and TEMPUR both state compliance with BS 7177, the British Standard that tests a finished mattress for smouldering and flaming ignition.
