Comparison

Best king size mattresses

The best king size mattress gives two adults 75cm of width each on a 150 x 200cm UK king, and at that width it has three more jobs: keep one partner's turns from reaching the other, stay supportive out to the edges and suit two different body weights. We rank hybrid, memory foam and traditional pocket-sprung kings on those points, then on the price of the king size itself, the length of the sleep trial and how the mattress reaches your bedroom. A UK king is not the 160 x 200cm European king, so check the centimetre figure before you order.

Pros
  • Partner's turns barely registered in our test
  • Medium-firm, 4 of 5 on Emma's scale
  • 200-night trial, 10-year guarantee

Best for side sleepers

Origin Hybrid Pro

Side sleepers sharing a king should shortlist the Origin Hybrid Pro, a 31cm hybrid that Origin describes as medium-plush, with up to 5,300 springs in seven zones and a layer of micro-springs that Origin says isolates motion. The king costs £652 with free next-day delivery on the UK mainland, a 200-night trial and a 15-year warranty. Origin publishes no firmness number, and most stomach sleepers will find it too soft. It outscores the Emma Original at number three, but our top three places go to brands on Awin, the affiliate network we use, as the methodology explains.

Pros
  • Up to 5,300 springs in seven zones
  • Micro-spring layer for partner movement
  • 200-night trial, 15-year warranty

At £2,599 it is the dearest king here by far, and TEMPUR sells soft, medium, medium firm and firm versions at that price.

Pros

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Buy a king for the width, then pick the construction for the person lying next to you, dense foam for a restless partner and firm-edged springs if you both use the whole bed. If your weights differ by three stone or more, a zip-and-link king will serve you better than any single mattress.”

How big is a UK king size mattress?

A UK king size mattress measures 150 x 200cm, or 5ft x 6ft6in, in the National Bed Federation’s size guide. It gives two sleepers 75cm of width each, 7.5cm more per person than a double, and its 200cm length suits anyone up to 190cm tall under the NBF’s advice to buy a mattress at least 10cm longer than the tallest sleeper. A European king is 160 x 200cm and will not fit a UK king frame, and what British shops call a queen is a 120 x 190cm small double.

UK size Size (cm) Imperial Width each if two share Tallest sleeper it suits (NBF 10cm rule)
Small double (UK queen) 120 x 190 4ft x 6ft3in 60cm 180cm
Double 135 x 190 4ft6in x 6ft3in 67.5cm 180cm
King 150 x 200 5ft x 6ft6in 75cm 190cm
European king 160 x 200 5ft3in x 6ft6in 80cm 190cm
Super king 180 x 200 6ft x 6ft6in 90cm 190cm

At 31cm the Origin Hybrid Pro is the deepest mattress here, so check the pocket depth of your fitted sheets and any mattress protector before it arrives. If your elbows touch when you lie side by side with hands behind your heads, the NBF’s showroom test, our super king comparison covers the 180 x 200cm size, and our double mattress comparison ranks the 135 x 190cm options.

Two sleepers, one surface

The National Bed Federation makes the case for extra width in its bed size guide.

“So with partner disturbance a major cause of poor sleep, buying a bigger bed should result in a better night’s sleep.”

Width helps, and so does the construction. In a Loughborough University study of 46 couples tracked with wrist actimetry for eight nights, Pankhurst and Horne (Sleep, 1994) found that about a third of sleep movements happened in both partners within the same 30-second window. The TEMPUR PRO SmartCool and the Ergoflex 5G are all-foam, with no springs to carry a bounce across the bed. The other eight use pocket springs, and Origin adds micro-springs to the Hybrid Pro that it says isolate motion. Edges count on a king because two people use the full 150cm. The Simba Hybrid Pro sits on a steel SupportCore base, the Nectar Premier Hybrid has reinforced edges and Emma wraps the Original Pro’s springs in a comfort foam edge, whereas The Guardian’s review of the OTTY Original Hybrid noted that “Edge and corner support could be much improved.”

Firmness and weight for two bodies

Medium-firm is the safest starting point for a shared king. In a randomised, double-blind trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain, Kovacs and colleagues (The Lancet, 2003) found medium-firm mattresses did better than firm ones after 90 days, with an odds ratio of 2.36 for pain in bed and 2.10 for disability. A 2015 systematic review of 24 controlled trials in Sleep Health (Radwan and colleagues) concluded that a medium-firm, self-adjusted mattress is optimal for sleep comfort, quality and spinal alignment.

Makers’ labels are only a guide. In our test the Emma Original Pro felt firmer than Emma’s 3 out of 5, which suits back and front sleepers, while Origin’s medium-plush Hybrid Pro is the softer choice for a light side sleeper. Weight is the harder problem for couples. The NBF’s buying advice says partners whose weights differ by 3 stone (18kg) or more may need different mattresses, for example two singles zipped together with split tension. Bed Factory Direct sells the Hypnos Orthos Support 7 as a zip-and-link king, Ergoflex rates the 5G for up to 18 stone (114kg) per person, and TEMPUR states a capacity of about 150kg per side for the PRO SmartCool.

Delivery, trial and what a king costs

A king is heavy to move. Nectar lists its Premier Hybrid king at 44.4kg, and the TEMPUR, Hypnos and Emma Original Pro kings weigh 34kg to 38kg by their makers’ figures. Origin delivers the next working day on the UK mainland for orders before 9am, Emma in two to seven working days, TEMPUR in 14 to 28 days and Bed Factory Direct in four to six weeks for the Hypnos. Trials range from Ergoflex’s 30 days to Nectar’s 365 nights, and the Hypnos has none, so lie on it in a showroom for at least the 10 minutes the NBF recommends, in your normal sleeping position.

A king costs more than most people spend on a bed. In the NBF’s November 2021 survey of 500 recent buyers, 46% spent up to £399 and three quarters under £800. The NBF’s size guide also works out that every £100 spent on a bed costs 3.9p a night over seven years, so at the time of writing (September 2026) the gap between the cheapest and the dearest king here, about £2,160 at list prices, comes to roughly 84p a night. Our best mattresses ranking covers every size.

Methodology

How we rate

Every mattress here is ranked for two people sharing a 150 x 200cm UK king, the size given in the National Bed Federation’s size guide. Our overall score weights comfort at 30%, support at 25%, temperature at 15% and value at 30%. On this page support includes the edge build and how well each mattress keeps a partner’s movement on their own side, and value is judged on the price of the king itself, read together with the sleep trial and the guarantee, because the single price that brands advertise says little about a king.

King prices, sizes and stock were read from each seller’s UK shop on 28 September 2026, and from Bed Factory Direct for the Hypnos, which Hypnos sells through retailers. The prices shown are regular list prices and update from our product records. We tested the Emma Original and the Emma Original Pro at home. The other eight are assessed on verified specifications, with The Guardian’s review of the OTTY cited where it applies. The top three places go to brands whose affiliate programmes run on Awin, the network we use, which can pay us a commission. Below them the order follows the score, and the two Origin mattresses, which both outscore the Emma Original at number three, say so on their cards.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size is a king size mattress in the UK?

A UK king size mattress is 150 x 200cm, or 5ft x 6ft6in, according to the National Bed Federation. It is 15cm wider and 10cm longer than a 135 x 190cm double, and 10cm narrower than a 160 x 200cm European king.

Is a king size bigger than a queen size in the UK?

Yes, by a wide margin. What British shops call a queen is a small double of 120 x 190cm, so a 150 x 200cm UK king is 30cm wider and 10cm longer. American queen and king sizes are different again, so order a British mattress by the centimetre figure.

What is the best king size mattress in the UK?

The Emma Original Pro is our best king size mattress for most couples, a 27cm seven-zone hybrid at £919 in 150 x 200cm that felt firmer than its 3 out of 5 rating and never ran hot in our own test. For less, the Emma Original costs £639 as a king and the Origin Hybrid £440.

How much should I spend on a king size mattress?

Kings in this ranking run from £440 for the Origin Hybrid to £2,599 for the TEMPUR PRO SmartCool at list price, and six of the ten cost under £800. That is where most buyers land, since three quarters of recent buyers in the National Bed Federation's November 2021 survey spent under £800 on a new bed. The NBF's size guide puts the running cost at 3.9p a night for every £100, over seven years.

Is a king size mattress big enough for two adults?

Yes, a king gives each of two adults 75cm of width, against 67.5cm on a double, and its 200cm length suits sleepers up to 190cm tall under the NBF's rule of 10cm more than the tallest sleeper. In the NBF's elbow test you both lie on your backs with your hands behind your heads, and if your elbows touch, a 180 x 200cm super king is the better size.

What is the best firm king size mattress?

The Hypnos Orthos Support 7 is the firmest king in this ranking, sold in firm or extra firm tension at £1,259 for either. Among boxed hybrids, Nectar rates its Premier Hybrid 7 out of 10 and OTTY gives its Original Hybrid the same figure. Firm is not automatically better for back pain, since a 2003 Lancet trial found medium-firm mattresses did better than firm ones for pain in bed.

Which king size mattress suits partners of different weights?

If your weights differ by 3 stone (18kg) or more, the National Bed Federation suggests different mattresses, for example two singles zipped together with split tension, and Bed Factory Direct sells the Hypnos Orthos Support 7 as a zip-and-link king. On one surface, the Ergoflex 5G is rated for up to 18 stone (114kg) per person and TEMPUR states about 150kg per side for the PRO SmartCool.

How often should you replace a king size mattress?

Check a king mattress for replacement once it is seven to 10 years old, the age at which the NBF's Bed Advice suggests asking the question. Guarantees in this ranking run from 10 years on most models to 15 years on both Origin mattresses and the Forever Warranty on the Nectar Premier Hybrid.
