Comparison

Best mattresses for side sleepers

The best mattress for side sleepers lets your shoulder and hip sink in far enough for your spine to stay level while the waist between them stays supported, which for most people means a medium-soft to medium feel over zoned pocket springs. How soft you should go depends on your weight, how warm you sleep and whether you share the bed, and firmness labels cannot be compared from one brand to the next. This ranking judges every recommended mattress for side sleepers on those points, plus the UK home trial and the price of a double.

  • Firmer support suits heavier side sleepers
  • Stayed cool in our summer test
  • 200-night trial, 10-year guarantee

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Choose by your weight first and the maker's firmness number second, because a 2 out of 5 from one brand and a 6 out of 10 from another are not on the same scale.”

Most adults spend more of the night on their side than in any other position. In a 2017 study in Nature and Science of Sleep that tracked 664 working adults with accelerometers, participants spent 54.1% of their time in bed on their side, 37.5% on their back and 7.3% on their front, and the share of side sleeping rose with age and body mass index.

Soft at the shoulder, supported at the waist

Lying on your side puts most of your weight through two narrow points, the shoulder and the hip, with the waist hanging between them. The National Bed Federation, the trade body for UK bed makers, puts the target in one line, “When you lie on your side your spine should be horizontal.” A mattress that is too firm pushes back at the shoulder and hip and bends the spine, while one that is too soft lets you sink until it drops out of line, as our back pain mattress and orthopaedic mattress rankings explain.

Sagging matters more on your side than on your back. In a sleep-lab study in Ergonomics (Verhaert et al., 2011), 17 healthy sleepers spent nights on a personalised support and on a deliberately sagging one, and the sagging set-up reduced sleep quality for people who sleep on their side or front.

Your weight sets how soft you should go

The NBF’s rule of thumb is that the heavier you are, the firmer the tension you will need, and that back sleepers may like a firmer feel than side sleepers. A light side sleeper barely compresses a medium-firm comfort layer, so the shoulder takes the pressure, while a heavy one can sink through a soft layer until the hips drop below the line of the spine. The makers say the same about their own models. Emma steers stomach sleepers and people of higher body weight away from the medium-soft Original Elite, and Ergoflex gives weight guidance of 18 stone (114kg) per person for the 5G. If every mattress feels hard to you, our best soft mattresses ranking goes further down the scale.

Firmness numbers do not travel between brands

Emma rates the Original Elite 2 out of 5, OTTY puts the Pure Hybrid at 6.5 out of 10, Nectar calls its Premier 6 out of 10, Origin places the Hybrid anywhere between 6 and 7 depending on the sleeper’s weight and describes the Hybrid Pro only as medium-plush. None of these scales is shared. The NBF says there is no industry-wide standard to compare firmness ratings from one manufacturer to another. The table below gives each maker’s own rating instead of an invented common number. Specifications come from each maker’s UK product page and double prices from our check on 28 September 2026.

Zones, springs and heat

Zoning is how a mattress gives at the shoulder and holds at the hip. The NBF explains that spring units can be zoned across the middle to give extra support for heavier hips and shoulders. Seven zones in the two Emma hybrids and the Origin Hybrid Pro, five in the Origin Hybrid and 12 in the Nectar Premier’s honeycomb base are the makers’ own counts. Heat is the other trade-off, since sinking into a soft layer puts more of your body in contact with foam. The hybrids here put open or infused layers over the springs, such as the Emma Elite’s AirGrid lattice and the gel-infused foam in both Origins, and the Silentnight has a mesh border and no memory foam at all. The three all-foam picks hold more warmth, although the Ergoflex adds a 5cm airflow layer and Nectar uses a cover with extra cooling fibres.

When a topper is enough

If your mattress is younger than the seven to 10 years after which the NBF suggests asking whether you need a new bed, and it is simply too firm, a soft topper adds give at the shoulder for much less than a new mattress (our best mattress toppers ranking covers the options). A topper will not rescue a mattress that already dips, which the Ergonomics study found side sleepers feel most. Hip pain that gets worse when you lie on your side is not always the mattress’s fault. The NHS lists bursitis among the causes and advises seeing a GP if hip pain is affecting your sleep.

Methodology

How we rate

Four criteria decide the order on this page: side-sleeper fit (each maker’s own firmness rating, and whether the springs or foams are zoned to give under the shoulder and hold the hips), pressure relief in the comfort layers, heat, and the UK home trial. We quote every brand on its own scale, because the National Bed Federation notes that there is no industry-wide standard to compare firmness ratings between manufacturers, and we judge heat from the construction, open lattices, springs and airflow layers against solid memory foam.

Every mattress on Sleep Magazine carries the same five scores. The overall score starts from comfort 30%, support 25%, temperature 15% and value 30%, where value sets the UK price against the trial and guarantee, plus a brand adjustment that favours established brands with a strong UK presence, including those whose sales earn us commission. The top three places each answer a different side-sleeper need (a soft hybrid, a hybrid for couples, memory foam in a Soft feel), and from fourth place down the order follows the overall score. The exception is the Emma Original Pro, which scores highest overall but ranks fifth because it felt firmer than Emma’s medium rating in our own test. A 2015 systematic review of 24 controlled trials in Sleep Health (Radwan et al.) found a medium-firm, self-adjusted mattress optimal for comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment in general, so we point only lighter side sleepers to the softest feels here.

We tested the Emma Original Pro ourselves, with our own photos. For the other nine we use each maker’s UK product page and our own price and stock checks. All ten were in stock in a UK double (135x190) when we checked prices on 28 September 2026.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best mattress for side sleepers in the UK?

The Emma Original Elite is our pick for most side sleepers, a 27cm hybrid that Emma rates 2 out of 5 (medium soft) with seven-zone pocket springs, at £1,159 for a double. On a tighter budget, the Origin Hybrid has five spring zones for £410, and our best mattresses 2026 ranking covers every sleeping position.

What firmness of mattress is best for side sleepers?

Most side sleepers do best on a medium-soft to medium feel, soft enough for the shoulder and hip to sink in while the waist stays supported. The National Bed Federation advises that the heavier you are, the firmer the tension you will need, so a heavier side sleeper is often better on a firmer model such as the Emma Original Pro, and our firm mattress ranking covers that end of the scale.

Is memory foam or a hybrid better for side sleepers?

Either can work. Zoned springs give at the shoulder and let more air through, which is why seven of the ten picks here are hybrids or pocket sprung. Memory foam gives the deepest contour at the shoulder, which is why the Ergoflex 5G, with 9cm of it, and the TEMPUR PRO Plus SmartCool are in this ranking (see our best memory foam mattresses).

Why do my shoulders and hips ache when I sleep on my side?

Often the mattress is too firm for your weight, so the shoulder and hip take the load instead of sinking in. The National Bed Federation puts the aim in one line, that your spine should be horizontal when you lie on your side. The softest options here are the Emma Original Elite at 2 out of 5, the medium-plush Origin Hybrid Pro and the TEMPUR PRO Plus SmartCool in its Soft feel, and if hip pain persists the NHS advises seeing a GP when it affects your sleep.

What is the best mattress for side sleepers who sleep hot?

The Emma Original Elite is our pick for hot side sleepers, with an open AirGrid lattice over pocket springs instead of a solid memory foam top. For less, the OTTY Pure Hybrid infuses its memory foam with bamboo and charcoal at £649.99 for a double, and the Origin Hybrid, with gel-infused foam over its springs, is the cheapest pick here at £410.

Can a mattress topper help a side sleeper?

Yes, a soft topper can add cushioning at the shoulder and hip if your mattress is sound but too firm (our best mattress toppers ranking compares them). It will not fix a mattress that sags, and in a 2011 sleep-lab study in Ergonomics a sagging support reduced sleep quality for side and front sleepers.

How long should I try a new mattress before deciding?

Plan on several weeks, because three of the trials on this page set a minimum before you can send the mattress back: 60 nights within TEMPUR's 100-night trial, 28 nights for Silentnight's 60-night comfort exchange and 21 nights within Ergoflex's 30-night trial. The longest trial here is Nectar's 365 nights on the Premier Memory Foam, followed by 200 nights at Emma, Simba and Origin.

Is side sleeping the most common sleeping position?

Yes. In a 2017 accelerometer study of 664 working adults (Skarpsno et al.), participants spent 54.1% of their time in bed on their side, 37.5% on their back and 7.3% on their front, and side sleeping took a larger share with age and body mass index.
