Best organic mattresses

An organic mattress is only as organic as its certificates, and many mattresses sold in the UK as natural, eco or non-toxic carry no organic certification at all. We rank mattresses whose makers name certified organic wool, cotton or latex, and weigh what decides the purchase here, from how much of the mattress is certified and how it feels to the trial or exchange terms and the wait for a handmade bed.

  • Soft, medium or firm at one price
  • B Corp maker, handmade in Devon

Snoozel Green Organic Mattress

Best value certified latex

Snoozel Green Organic Mattress

Snoozel Green puts certified organic latex (GOLS), cotton and wool (both GOTS) over recycled steel springs, at a price closer to a boxed hybrid than to a handmade British mattress. A single costs £729 and a king £1,199, and the feel is buoyant and medium-firm.

The 101-night trial lets you send it back after 30 nights, collected free. Stock is the drawback, since in mid-October the single and king showed December delivery, and the double and super king were sold out.

Pros
  • GOLS latex, GOTS cotton and wool
  • 101-night trial, free collection
  • Delivered flat to the room you choose
Cons
  • Double and super king sold out in October
  • Five-year guarantee only

Slumberland Naturals Premium Wool Mattress

If you would rather buy from a high-street retailer, the Slumberland Naturals Premium Wool at Bensons for Beds is the least expensive double we rank, at £839.99.

Be clear about what you are paying for. GOTS-certified organic cotton and flax sit alongside conventional wool and quilting made from 75% recycled polyester, so this is a partly organic mattress. It is an honest halfway house, with 2,550 springs in two layers and a choice of medium or firm.

Pros
  • GOTS organic cotton and flax fillings
  • 2,550 springs in two layers
  • TENCEL cover, soft against the skin
Cons

Abaca Rhossili Natural Latex Mattress
Abaca Rhossili Natural Latex MattressAbaca Rhossili Natural Latex MattressAbaca Rhossili Natural Latex Mattress
Best all-latex option

Abaca Rhossili Natural Latex Mattress

With no metal anywhere, the Abaca Rhossili is 18cm of GOLS-certified organic latex, a 12cm core between two 3cm pads, wrapped in organic wool and an organic cotton cover. The softer outer pads take the edge off the latex, and the core gives firm, even support underneath.

Abaca guarantees it for 15 years, the longest guarantee on this page, which softens the cost of a standard double at £2,580. Our latex mattress comparison includes less expensive latex options.

Pros
  • 18cm of GOLS-certified organic latex
  • No springs or metal
  • 15-year guarantee
Cons
  • Only medium can be ordered online
  • Second-priciest double on this page

Naturalmat Mohair Mattress
Naturalmat Mohair MattressNaturalmat Mohair MattressNaturalmat Mohair Mattress
Best firm option

Naturalmat Mohair Mattress

Back sleepers who find most natural mattresses too yielding should start with the Naturalmat Mohair, the firmest model in Naturalmat's range. Organic coir does the work, with coconut-fibre layers around a natural latex core under mohair and organic wool, 21cm deep and with no springs.

At £2,770 it is the priciest double here; it earns that for back sleepers who need a firm, breathable bed. For firm mattresses with springs, see our firm mattress comparison.

Pros
  • Firmest model in Naturalmat's range
  • Coir and wool breathe well
  • Spring-free coir and latex core
Cons
  • Too firm for most side sleepers
  • Mohair layer carries no organic certificate

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Before you pay extra for organic, ask which layers carry a certificate, because GOTS and GOLS only cover the materials they name and only a whole-mattress certificate covers everything you sleep on.”

What the organic labels actually cover

Three certificates appear on organic mattresses, and they do different jobs. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) covers cotton and wool from the farm to the finished fabric. GOTS describes itself as “the worldwide leading voluntary sustainability standard for the post-harvest textile value chain for certified organic fibres”, and its rules require at least 95% certified organic fibre for a product labelled organic and at least 70% for one labelled made with organic materials. The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), run by Control Union, does the same job for natural latex.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a different kind of label. It tests a material against more than 1,000 harmful substances but says nothing about how the raw material was grown, so an OEKO-TEX latex layer is tested latex, not organic latex. Most organic mattresses certify some layers and not others, and the table shows what each seller states for the mattresses we rank.

Mattress Certified organic, as the seller states Core Depth Feel Trial or exchange
Naturalmat Superb Wool (Soil Association or OF&G farms), cotton (GOTS) Pocket springs and natural latex 25cm Soft, medium or firm 45-day exchange
Warren Evans Natural 6000 Hybrid British wool (GOTS) 2,000 pocket springs and 4,000 mini springs 29cm Medium or medium-firm Six-month refund trial
Snoozel Green Organic Mattress Latex (GOLS), cotton and wool (GOTS) Organic latex over pocket springs 27cm Medium-firm 101 nights
Slumberland Naturals Premium Wool Cotton and flax (GOTS) 2,550 pocket springs in two layers 32.5cm Medium or firm No sleep trial
Abaca Snowdon Whole mattress (GOTS, Soil Association) Hand-framed pocket springs 20cm Soft, medium or firm 14-day exchange
Abaca Rhossili Latex (GOLS), wool and cotton 18cm organic latex, no springs About 20cm Medium 14-day exchange
Naturalmat Mohair Wool (Soil Association or OF&G farms), cotton (GOTS) Organic coir and natural latex, no springs 21cm Firm 45-day exchange

Springs, latex or coir

The core decides how a mattress feels far more than the organic label does. Pocket springs under wool feel bouncy and traditional and sleep cool, which suits most back and side sleepers. Latex pushes back quickly and spreads pressure evenly, but it makes a mattress heavy, and anyone with a latex allergy should rule it out and look at our hypoallergenic mattresses. Coir, made from coconut fibre, is the firmest and most breathable core of the three and suits back sleepers and heavier adults better than side sleepers.

Wool fillings settle under your body over the first months, which is normal. Makers ask you to rotate or turn these mattresses to even it out, and Warren Evans, for example, asks owners of its double-sided models to flip them after the second week and then every three months.

Chemical-free and non-toxic claims

No mattress is free of chemistry, and adult mattresses sold in the UK still have to meet fire-safety rules; Naturalmat and Snoozel Green both cite BS 7177 on their product pages. What organic makers avoid is the usual way of meeting them, with chemical fire-retardant sprays and synthetic foam. Most rely on the natural flame resistance of wool, which Naturalmat and Warren Evans both point to, and Snoozel Green adds a graphite-blend latex layer as a fire barrier. If low chemical exposure is your main reason to buy, ask for the certificate number behind any GOTS, GOLS or OEKO-TEX claim and look it up with the certifier before trusting a “chemical-free” badge.

If the budget does not stretch

Organic mattresses cost more because organic wool and latex cost more to buy and most are sewn by hand. A wool topper on your current mattress gives you a natural sleeping surface for a fraction of the price, and our wool topper comparison sets out the options by weight and care. Whichever you choose, a breathable cotton protector keeps sweat out of the wool; our mattress protector guide lists them. If a natural feel matters more to you than certification, the Talalay latex models in our Dunlopillo comparison are one option, and our best mattresses guide covers the wider market.

Methodology

How we rate

Every mattress in this ranking had to pass one test before we scored it: the seller must name at least one certified organic material in that specific mattress, and we checked the claim on the maker’s own product or materials page in October 2026. Descriptions such as “natural”, “eco” or “British wool” were not enough on their own, which is why popular foam-free wool ranges without an organic claim are not listed.

We then scored each mattress on comfort, support, temperature and value, and gave extra weight to three things that decide a purchase on this topic.

  • How much is certified. A whole mattress certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard counts for more than one organic layer; the buying advice below explains what each label covers.
  • Buying risk. Many organic mattresses are made to order and come with an exchange instead of a refund, so trial terms, guarantee length and delivery time all count.
  • Price for a double. We compared the 135cm or 137cm double on each maker’s own price list.

Prices, sizes and stock were checked on each seller’s website in October 2026. The Slumberland mattress is priced at Bensons for Beds.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best organic mattress in the UK?

We rate the Naturalmat Superb as the best organic mattress for most UK buyers, because it combines wool from certified organic farms, an organic cotton cover and a choice of soft, medium or firm springs, all made by hand in Devon. If you want the whole mattress certified, the Abaca Snowdon carries a Soil Association certification to GOTS.

Which organic mattress should I choose?

Choose the core first: pocket springs under wool for a bouncy, cool, traditional feel, latex for even pressure relief, or coir if you need a firm surface. Then check which layers carry a certificate and whether the seller offers a refund trial or only an exchange.

Is a natural mattress the same as an organic mattress?

No. A natural mattress uses natural materials such as wool, cotton or latex, while an organic mattress uses materials farmed and processed to a certified standard such as GOTS for textiles or GOLS for latex. Many British wool mattresses are natural without being certified organic.

Are organic mattresses chemical-free and non-toxic?

Organic mattresses avoid synthetic foam and chemical fire-retardant sprays, but they still meet UK fire-safety rules, usually through the natural flame resistance of wool. For evidence of low harmful-substance levels, look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which tests materials against more than 1,000 substances.

Is there a vegan organic mattress?

None of the mattresses in this ranking is vegan, because each contains wool, so a vegan buyer needs a wool-free latex or coir mattress with an organic cotton cover and should ask the maker for the GOLS or GOTS certificate behind it.

How much does an organic mattress cost in the UK?

A double in this ranking costs from £839.99 for the partly organic Slumberland Naturals Premium Wool to £2,770 for the Naturalmat Mohair. Handmade, mostly organic doubles from Devon and Wales sit between roughly £2,000 and £3,000.

Do organic mattresses come with a sleep trial?

Some do. Warren Evans gives six months with a full refund and Snoozel Green 101 nights. Naturalmat and Abaca make their mattresses to order and offer exchanges instead, for 45 days and 14 days respectively.
