Comparison

Best feather mattress toppers

The best feather mattress topper for you depends on how much down the fill contains, whether a feather base sits under the down layer, and whether you can wash it. This comparison ranks feather and down toppers, deep featherbed toppers and pure goose feather toppers sold in UK sizes by fill ratio, construction, depth, care and double price, and answers the allergy and down welfare questions buyers ask before choosing natural fill.

Soak&Sleep Goose Down Dual Chamber Mattress Topper

The Soak&Sleep Goose Down Dual Chamber Mattress Topper is our best feather mattress topper because it puts 70% goose down in the top chamber over a chamber of 100% goose feather, so you get the softness of down without sinking through to the mattress. It is 7cm deep, costs £190 in a double and carries a five-year guarantee, matched here only by John Lewis.

Pros
  • 70% goose down top chamber
  • Goose feather base chamber adds body

Best value

DUSK Supreme Goose Down Mattress Topper

Goose down at a feather price is the case for the DUSK Supreme Goose Down Mattress Topper. Its top tier is 70% goose down, the same share as the Soak&Sleep and Dorma duals, yet a double costs £100, and DUSK states the feather and down meet the Responsible Down Standard. The catch is care, because the 5cm topper must be professionally laundered and never tumble dried.

Pros
  • 70% goose down top tier
  • Lowest double price for 70% down
  • RDS-certified feather and down
  • Baffle walls hold the fill
Cons
  • Professional laundering only
  • Only 5cm deep

Scooms Hungarian Goose Feather & Down Mattress Topper
Best certified natural fill

Scooms Hungarian Goose Feather & Down Mattress Topper

Buyers who want certified fill should look at the Scooms Hungarian Goose Feather & Down Mattress Topper, the only pick here that names four standards on its spec list: OEKO-TEX Standard 100, the Responsible Down Standard, NOMITE and Downafresh. Its 85% goose feather and 15% goose down sit in 7.5cm baffle boxes, about 1,300g of fill per square metre by our calculation from Scooms' fill weights. It scores a point above the Dorma, but at £260 it costs more than the Dorma in a double for 15% down against the Dorma's 70% down top layer, so it ranks fourth.

Pros
  • OEKO-TEX, RDS, NOMITE and Downafresh
  • 7.5cm baffle boxes hold the fill
  • 233 thread count down-proof cotton
  • Made in Hungary
Cons
  • Dearer than the Dorma, less down
  • Spot clean only
  • 30-night returns, unused only

The White Company Luxury White Down Topper
Best for the most down

The White Company Luxury White Down Topper

The White Company Luxury White Down Topper has the most down in this ranking, a detachable top layer of 80% goose down over a 100% goose feather base, 9cm deep in all. Its double measures 140x190 rather than the UK 135x190 and costs £365, the highest double price here, which is why the richest fill ranks ninth. The top layer comes off for washing, and returns need intact packaging.

Pros
  • 80% goose down top layer
  • 9cm, second deepest here
  • Top layer detaches for washing
  • 4.8 out of 5 from 148 reviews
Cons
  • Dearest double in this ranking
  • Double is 140cm wide, not 135cm
  • No down standard named

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Read the fill label before the product name, because 85% feather and 15% down is a feather topper whatever the packaging calls it. If you want the softness of down without sinking through to the mattress, a dual-layer topper with a feather base does that job better than one thick layer.”

Read the fill ratio before the product name

The label percentages decide how a feather topper feels. Under EN 12934, the European standard for labelling down and feather fillings, the down and feather shares are stated as percentages by weight, rounded to groups of 10% with the larger share first. The one exception is the 85% feather and 15% down blend, which was sold as “half-down” in Germany and as “feather/down” under the British standard. A product needs 60% or more down before it can be advertised as a down product under EN 13186, according to the IDFL guide to European labelling standards. By that test the top layers of the Soak&Sleep, DUSK Supreme and Dorma toppers (70% down) and of The White Company topper (80% down) are down layers. The John Lewis dual layer has a 50/50 top, the Scooms and Littens toppers are 85/15, the Early’s of Witney is 90/10 and the Homescapes is 100% goose feather.

Words such as Hungarian and white carry less information than the percentages. The same EN 12934 guidance lists the colour and provenance of the fill as optional details that the standard does not define. The DUSK Luxury publishes no ratio at all, and DUSK gives only the top-tier share for the Supreme.

Dual layer, baffle box or cassette

Construction decides whether a feather topper keeps its shape. A dual-layer topper puts a soft down layer over a base of 100% feather, which gives the down something firm to rest on, and the Soak&Sleep, DUSK Supreme, Dorma, John Lewis and The White Company toppers are built this way. Single-layer toppers rely on stitched compartments instead. Scooms sews its fill into 7.5cm baffle boxes, Homescapes and Littens use baffle walls, and Early’s of Witney uses cassettes. None of this removes the need to shake the topper every day or two, since feather and down flatten under your weight and only regain their loft when plumped.

Double prices at each merchant’s UK shop, checked 28 September 2026. The White Company double is 140x190, and the DUSK Supreme single was sold out.

Depth and what a topper cannot fix

Most feather toppers are 5cm to 7cm deep, and Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation, suggests at least 5cm because anything thinner is unlikely to make a noticeable difference. The same guide sums up the material in one line, “Feather and down toppers are luxuriously soft and breathable but tend to be more expensive.” At 5in (13cm), the Early’s of Witney topper is the only featherbed-depth pick here, and The White Company topper is next at 9cm. Extra depth adds softness rather than support, and Bed Advice UK warns that a topper on a mattress with deep dips will quickly mould to those same dips. If your mattress sags, replace it first.

Allergies and dust mites

If you are allergic to feathers, choose a synthetic topper, such as one from our memory foam topper ranking. For allergic rhinitis in general, the NHS advises you to “use synthetic bedding and covers, and wash bedding regularly at 60C and above”. The research on dust mites is less one-sided. In a 1999 study in Clinical & Experimental Allergy, Rains and colleagues placed new synthetic and new feather pillows on 12 beds, and after 12 months the synthetic pillows held 19.28 µg/g of the mite allergen Der p 1 against 6.45 µg/g for feather. A 1995 Sheffield study in the BMJ by Strachan and Carey linked non-feather bedding with severe wheeze in teenagers, with an odds ratio of 2.78 for foam pillows. Both studies looked at pillows rather than toppers, and the BMJ authors could not rule out that allergic families had already removed their feather bedding. None of the ten product pages states a 60°C wash for the whole topper, so if dust mites trouble you, put a washable protector over it (our best mattress protectors ranking covers them) or look at the Scooms, which lists the NOMITE mark.

Down welfare

The Responsible Down Standard from Textile Exchange prohibits live plucking and force-feeding, and a third-party certification body audits each stage of the supply chain from the farm onwards. Scooms, Homescapes, Early’s of Witney, John Lewis and the DUSK Supreme name RDS on their product pages, and Scooms and Homescapes also list OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Littens and The White Company name no down standard at all.

Methodology

How we rate

We compared ten feather-filled mattress toppers sold in UK bed sizes and in stock at the brand’s or retailer’s own UK shop when we checked prices and availability on 28 September 2026. Fill ratios, construction, depth, care instructions and per-size prices come from each merchant’s product page. We read every fill label the way EN 12934, the European standard for labelling down and feather fillings, defines it, as percentages by weight with the larger share named first.

Each overall score out of 10 starts from comfort 30%, support 25%, temperature 15% and value 30%, with a small adjustment for how established the brand is in the UK. On this topic four things moved the scores most.

  • Down share, because down gives loft and softness while feather gives body.
  • Construction, meaning a feather base under a down layer, or baffle boxes and cassettes that stop the fill drifting.
  • Depth, set against the 5cm minimum that Bed Advice UK suggests for a topper to make a noticeable difference.
  • Care and value, the double price weighed against washability, guarantee and returns terms.

Where two toppers score within one point of each other, the one that costs less for a similar fill or gives more down for the money ranks higher, which is why the Scooms topper sits fourth. Prices are the merchants’ prices for a UK double (135x190cm) unless we name another size.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best feather mattress topper in the UK?

The Soak&Sleep Goose Down Dual Chamber Mattress Topper is our best feather mattress topper, a 7cm topper with 70% goose down in the top chamber over a goose feather base, at £190 in a double. For less money, the DUSK Supreme Goose Down Mattress Topper, also a pick in our soft mattress topper ranking, has the same 70% goose down share in its top tier for £100 in a double.

What is the difference between a feather topper and a feather and down topper?

The difference is the share of down, which EN 12934 labels as a percentage by weight. A product needs 60% or more down to be advertised as a down product under EN 13186, according to the IDFL labelling guide, so the 85% feather and 15% down Scooms and Littens toppers are feather toppers with some down, and the Homescapes topper is 100% goose feather.

What is a featherbed mattress topper?

A featherbed mattress topper is a thick feather-filled layer, deeper than the usual 5cm to 7cm topper, and the deepest in this ranking is the Early’s of Witney Duck Feather & Down Mattress Topper at 5in (13cm), filled with 90% duck feather and 10% duck down, at £149 in a double.

Are feather mattress toppers suitable for allergy sufferers?

Not if you are allergic to feathers, and the NHS advises people with allergic rhinitis to “use synthetic bedding and covers, and wash bedding regularly at 60C and above”. For dust mites the evidence is mixed, since a 1999 study in Clinical & Experimental Allergy found new synthetic pillows held 19.28 µg/g of the mite allergen Der p 1 after 12 months against 6.45 µg/g for feather pillows.

Can you wash a feather mattress topper?

It depends on the model, so read the care details before you buy. The DUSK Luxury Duck Feather & Down topper machine washes at 40°C and The White Company topper has a top layer that detaches for washing, while the Scooms and John Lewis dual layer are spot clean only and Soak&Sleep recommends a professional wash every six months.

How do you stop a feather mattress topper going flat?

Shake and plump it every day or two, and rotate it now and then so the same spot is not always under your hips. Feather and down flatten under your weight, and baffle-box or cassette toppers such as the Scooms and the Early's of Witney are stitched to stop the fill drifting.

Is a goose feather topper better than a duck feather topper?

Not by definition, because EN 12934 treats the species as an optional label detail while the down share must be stated, so compare the percentages first. Price follows the down share and the brand more than the bird: the DUSK Supreme, with a 70% goose down top tier, costs £100 in a double, less than the £135 of the John Lewis dual layer with its 50% duck down top.

How do I know the down in a topper is ethically sourced?

Look for the Responsible Down Standard, which Textile Exchange says prohibits live plucking and force-feeding, with each stage of the supply chain audited from the farm. In this ranking the Scooms, Homescapes, Early's of Witney, John Lewis and DUSK Supreme toppers name RDS on their product pages.
