The Homescapes Goose Feather Bed Mattress Topper is a 7 cm baffle-box topper filled with small goose feathers under a 233 thread count down-proof cotton cover, priced from £44.99 for a single. Homescapes calls it its thickest topper, and it suits side sleepers who want a firm mattress to feel noticeably softer.

Construction and standards

According to Homescapes’ product page, the filling is made of small, fine goose feathers 4 to 6 cm long rather than larger feathers broken into pieces, and a baffle-box construction divides it into walled pockets so it cannot drift into clumps. Elastic straps at each corner hold it under the sheet. The specification panel on that page swaps the cover and filling labels; the description confirms a cotton cover and goose feather filling.

Homescapes states that the topper is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and that its feathers carry the Responsible Down Standard.

• OEKO-TEX Standard 100: OEKO-TEX says labelled items are tested against more than 1,000 harmful substances.
• Responsible Down Standard: the standard run by Textile Exchange prohibits live plucking and force-feeding.

Feel and upkeep

We rate it soft, 3 out of 10. Seven centimetres of loose feather compresses under the shoulder and hip and springs back when shaken, which is the sink-in feel people buy a feather bed for. It adds cushioning, not support, so it will not fix a sagging mattress. Loose feather also flattens with use, so it needs shaking most days, and feathers hold more warmth than a thin synthetic pad. Homescapes lists it as machine washable.

Allergies, delivery and returns

Despite the heat treatment, a feather topper is not the first choice for allergy sufferers: the NHS recommends synthetic bedding for people with allergic rhinitis. Delivery is free on UK orders over £29.99, in two to three working days. Returns are accepted within 30 days if the topper is unused, unwashed and in its original packaging. There is no sleep trial and no stated guarantee.
