DUSK Luxury Duck Feather & Down Mattress Topper reviewed

The DUSK Luxury Duck Feather & Down Mattress Topper is a 5 cm natural-fill topper built in two tiers, lightweight duck feather on top and duck down underneath, inside a 100% cotton casing. A single costs £65, against £100 for the M&S Duck Feather & Down topper, and unlike many feather toppers it can go in the washing machine.

What is the DUSK feather and down topper made of?

Under the European labelling rules summarised by the textile testing laboratory IDFL, a filling needs at least 60% down before it may be advertised as a down product, so expect a feather-led fill unless DUSK states otherwise.

How does it feel?

We place it at 3 on our 1 to 10 firmness scale, medium-soft and at the soft end of that band. With feather on top and a lofty down tier underneath, the surface has some spring from the feather quills and a deep, yielding base. The whole topper compresses under a hip or shoulder rather than holding it up, so it softens a firm mattress but will not rescue a sagging one. Natural fill also insulates: cold sleepers like that, hot sleepers may not. Shake it out every few days to keep the fill level.

Washing and allergies

Washability is where it beats the M&S Duck Feather & Down topper, whose care label forbids washing altogether. DUSK allows a 40C wash and a low tumble dry. That is still below the 60C the NHS recommends for bedding if you have allergic rhinitis, and the NHS advice is to choose synthetic bedding and covers in the first place, so allergy sufferers are better served by a synthetic topper. A king or super king feather topper is bulky and heavy when wet, so check that it fits your drum before the first wash, or use a launderette machine.
