M&S Duck Feather & Down Mattress Topper reviewed

The M&S Duck Feather & Down Mattress Topper is a plush natural-fill layer for softening a firm mattress: a pure cotton cover filled with 85% duck feather and 15% duck down, held on by four elasticated straps. It comes in four UK sizes from £100 for a single.

What is the M&S Duck Feather & Down topper made of?

These details come from the M&S product page. The ratio matters. Under the European labelling rules summarised by the testing laboratory IDFL, a filling needs 60% or more down before it may be advertised as a down product. At 15% down this is a feather topper with some down mixed in. Feathers are flatter and heavier than down clusters, and their quills give a springier feel, so a feather-led fill keeps more body under the hips but lofts less than a down-rich one.

How does it feel?

M&S describes a plush, sink-in feel with comfortable support. We put it at 4 on our 1 to 10 firmness scale, medium-soft. It softens the surface of a firm mattress, but it will not correct a sagging one, because a fibre layer compresses under weight instead of holding you up the way foam does. The cover is stitched into square boxes, visible in the photographs, which stop the fill drifting to one end; even so, plan to shake it out every few days so the loft stays even across the bed.

Care and allergies

The care label is the biggest drawback. It says do not wash, do not tumble dry and do not dry clean, so the topper cannot be laundered at all and needs a washable mattress protector over it. People with dust mite or feather allergies should choose something else. The NHS advice on allergic rhinitis is to use synthetic bedding and covers and to wash bedding regularly at 60C or above, and this topper meets neither.
