The M&S Luxury Down Alternative Mattress Topper is a feather-free take on a down topper: a polyester fill that M&S says is similar to down, inside a 180 thread count pure cotton cover with a percale finish. Box quilting keeps the fill evenly spread and elasticated straps hold it on the bed.

It suits anyone who likes the soft, settling feel of a down topper but reacts to feathers, or would rather not sleep on animal fill. Compared with the M&S Duck Feather & Down topper it is cheaper in every size and lighter to lift, while the cotton percale cover keeps a crisp, cool surface.
Two limits are worth knowing. Polyester fibre cushions the surface but adds little support, so it will not help a mattress that has started to dip. And despite the synthetic fill, the care label rules out washing and dry cleaning, so a washable protector is needed. The 17 reviews on the M&S site average 4.8 out of 5.
