The M&S Ultimate Comfort Mattress Topper pairs a 230 thread count pure cotton cover, the finest fabric on any M&S topper, with a polyester fibre fill that M&S describes as a thick layer of softness. Square quilting keeps the fill from drifting and wide elastic trims hold it to the mattress.

Construction and care

What you pay for here is the cover. Cotton at 230 threads per square inch feels smoother and breathes better than the polyester covers on the cheaper M&S toppers, which matters on a topper you lie directly on under a single sheet. M&S does not publish the depth, though, so you cannot compare its loft with the 10cm Stay Cool, which costs less in every size.

M&S also lists an Ultimate Comfort 6cm version at £10 more per size, shown with the same photographs; the only difference its product page states is the 6cm depth. Neither version can be washed or dry cleaned, so use a washable protector on top. On the M&S site 23 buyers give the standard Ultimate Comfort an average of 4.7 out of 5.
