“On a super king, heat and weight matter more than on a double, because two people share one surface and a deep topper can weigh 15kg. Choose the material for the warmer sleeper, then check the straps and the trial before the price.”
Measure the mattress before you choose a super king topper
A UK super king mattress measures 180x200cm, or 6ft x 6ft 6in, according to the bed size guide from Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation. That is 45cm wider and 10cm longer than a UK double, so a super king topper covers 3.6 square metres against 2.57 for a double, about 40% more material to lift, wash and pay for. Makers do not all cut to the same size. Silentnight lists its Wellbeing Cool Touch super king topper at 183x203cm, while Panda sells its Super King at 180x200cm, so compare your mattress with the listed dimensions before you order. If your super king is a zip and link bed, two singles joined together as Bed Advice UK describes, a one-piece topper also covers the join down the middle.
Material decides how the bed feels
Every topper here except the 2.5cm Soak&Sleep Soft As Down meets the 5cm minimum Bed Advice UK suggests. Memory foam, in the TEMPUR ONE and the Dunelm Gel Fusion, moulds around shoulders and hips but holds more heat. Latex, in the Latex Sense Luxury Dunlop, also contours but bounces back quickly. Sprung hybrids such as the Simba Hybrid Essential and the Panda Hybrid Bamboo put micro springs under foam for more bounce, and the Woolroom Woolly Sprung replaces the foam with wool. The two Soak&Sleep toppers add softness rather than support, and Bed Advice UK describes feather and down toppers as “luxuriously soft and breathable but tend to be more expensive.”
Regular super king prices at each merchant’s UK shop, checked 28 September 2026. The Soft As Down price is for the 2.5cm version. *Emma’s buy box gives its toppers 100 nights and up to 10 years, while the FAQ on the same product pages says 30 nights and 2 years.
Heat matters more when two people share one topper
The most direct evidence on topper material and heat is a 2018 randomised crossover study in PLOS One (Chiba and colleagues) that compared a 3.5cm high-rebound fibre topper with a 3.5cm TEMPUR memory foam topper sold in Japan. On the high-rebound topper the minimum core body temperature of 10 young men fell to 36.05°C against 36.35°C on memory foam, and deep-sleep delta power early in the night rose by 27.8% in that group and by 24.7% in 20 older men. The trial was small and sponsored by airweave, the maker of the high-rebound topper, so treat it as a pointer rather than proof. It sits well with the NHS advice that “You may find it easier to sleep in a room that is quiet, dark and cool.” Neither test topper is sold here. If either of you wakes up warm, springs, wool or latex are safer choices than solid memory foam, and in our own test the Emma Original Pro slept cooler than a classic memory foam topper.
Weight, straps and washing at super king size
Weight is where super king toppers catch people out, and Emma gives about 15kg for the Original Pro in super king. With foam and sprung toppers you normally wash the removable cover rather than the core, and TEMPUR warns that washing the TEMPUR ONE topper itself will invalidate its guarantee. The Emma and TEMPUR covers wash at up to 40°C. On a topper 180cm wide, corner straps or a non-slip base stop it creeping to one side.
Trials differ as much as weight, and Simba’s 200-night trial is the longest here. Emma, TEMPUR, Latex Sense, Panda and Woolroom offer between 30 and 100 nights, while Dunelm and Soak&Sleep list no trial on these toppers.
When a topper is the wrong buy
A topper changes the feel of a mattress, not its structure, and Bed Advice UK warns that a topper on a mattress with deep dips will quickly mould to those same dips. For smaller beds, our king size and double topper rankings price each pick in those sizes, and our cooling toppers ranking has more on heat, with every size in our best mattress toppers. A topper does not protect the mattress from spills, so pair it with one of our best mattress protectors.
