Best hotel mattresses

A hotel bed feels good for three reasons you can copy at home: a medium feel that suits most sleepers, a cushioned top over pocket springs and a bigger size than most of us own. Below we compare the hotel-quality mattresses UK chains actually use with the best hotel-style alternatives, and show which one suits the way you sleep and what a king size costs.

Best overall

Aspire 7000 Pocket Wool Cashmere and Silk Pillowtop

Most people chasing a hotel feel want a soft top on a steady base, and the Aspire 7000 Pocket Wool Cashmere and Silk Pillowtop delivers both for far less than a hotel-supplier brand. It stacks 7,000 springs, 3,000 of them micro springs inside the hand-tufted pillowtop, over a medium-firm core, with wool, cashmere and silk in the comfort layer. A king costs £570, less than either hotel-chain mattress in the same size.

Pros
  • Hand-tufted pillowtop with 3,000 micro springs
  • Medium-firm base, the feel hotels aim for
  • Wool, cashmere and silk comfort layer
  • Six sizes, small single to super king
Cons
  • No return once the hygiene seal is broken
  • Animal fibres, so not vegan

Best for a longer lifespan

Aspire 7000 Pocket Wool Cashmere and Silk Dual Sided

Hotels keep mattresses going for years by turning them, and the dual-sided Aspire 7000 is built for exactly that routine. Each face carries 3,000 micro pocket springs and a wool, cashmere and silk layer over a shared core of 1,000 nested springs, so either side gives the same medium-firm feel. The second sleeping face roughly doubles the price of the pillowtop model, and it pays off over the years if you use it.

Pros
  • Sleeps the same on both faces
  • 7,000 pocket springs in total
  • Natural fillings on each side
  • Hand tufted with side support
Cons
  • Must be flipped every few months
  • Five-year guarantee only

Best budget pick

Aspire Cashmere 1000 Pocket Tufted

For a guest room that should feel like a good hotel stay, the Aspire Cashmere 1000 Pocket Tufted covers the basics for £420 in a king. It is a 25cm UK-made mattress with 1,000 nested pocket springs under a 250gsm cashmere and wool layer, and the tufting stops the fillings drifting. For a spare bed that sees guests a few nights a month, that is all the mattress you need. If you want more cushioning, the two Aspire 7000 models above add far more springs and natural fillings, and Aspire's wider range is compared separately.

Pros
  • Cheapest king in this ranking
  • 1,000 nested pocket springs, 25cm deep
  • Cashmere and wool comfort layer
  • Made in the UK
Cons
  • Thinner top than a true pillowtop
  • Less cushioning than the 7000 models

Best for hot sleepers

Sleepeezee Cool Refresh 3200 Pocket Pillow Top Mattress

If you overheat at night, the Sleepeezee Cool Refresh 3200 is the pillowtop to choose. A cool-touch cover sits over 2cm of StayCool gel and 2,000 mini pocket springs, with 1,200 larger springs beneath in a king, in a 30cm mattress that never needs flipping. Mattress Online sells it with a 100-night trial, which works as an exchange and needs the retailer's protector. The medium-soft feel is softer than the hotel norm, so heavier back sleepers may sink further than they like.

Pros
  • Cool-touch cover and 2cm gel layer
  • 3,200 springs in two layers (king)
  • 100-night exchange trial
  • Never needs flipping
Cons
  • Softer than most hotel beds
  • Trial needs the retailer's protector
  • No saving on a single

This is a genuine hotel model. Sleepeezee builds the Hotel Supreme 1400 for its hospitality range and also sells it on sleepeezee.com, where you tick a box to confirm residential use. It pairs 1,400 pocket springs with blended wool and rebound cotton, hand side stitching and nickel air vents in a double-sided, medium-firm build. Natural fillings and a firm, even surface make it the pick for anyone who wants a traditional hotel bed built from springs, wool and cotton. If you would like to skip the flipping, Sleepeezee's no-turn models are compared separately.

Pros

  • Wool and rebound cotton fillings

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Choose the feel first; the hotel name matters far less. A medium to medium-firm pocket-sprung mattress in a king size, with a top you can turn or zip off, is what keeps a hotel bed feeling new for years.”

What makes a hotel bed feel so good

Most of the hotel effect comes down to feel. Hotels buy for the widest range of guests, so they settle in the middle. Tristine Hargreaves, executive director of the National Bed Federation, put it this way to Which?, “To cater for the majority of guests, hotels should carefully select their beds to ensure they are neither too firm nor too soft.” She also advises a king or super king if your budget and room allow, because a partner is less likely to wake you in a bigger bed, and hotel beds tend to be larger than a standard UK double (135x190). In practice the hotel recipe is a medium or medium-firm pocket-sprung mattress with a cushioned top, in a generous size. If you are upgrading anyway, our king size and super king rankings cover those sizes in depth.

Pillowtop, two sides or a zip-off top

Every mattress on this page needs a little upkeep, and the design decides what kind. A pillowtop has one sleeping side, so you rotate it head to foot every few months, and its top is usually the first part to show body impressions. A double-sided mattress, such as the Aspire 7000 Dual Sided, the Vispring Elite, the Hotel Supreme 1400 or the Travelodge Dreamer, also needs flipping, which spreads wear over two faces and keeps it feeling even for longer. A zip-off layer, the pillowtop on the M&S Ultimate 5000 or the topper on Premier Inn’s mattress, lets you turn the comfort layer on its own. If your current mattress still supports you well, a soft topper is the cheaper way to add that hotel top layer, and our mattress topper ranking compares the options.

Real hotel models or hotel-style

You can buy the exact mattress from some UK chains. Premier Inn sells its bed through Premier Inn at Home, Travelodge through travelodgebed.co.uk, and Sleepeezee sells its Hotel Supreme 1400 direct. Hypnos supplies hotels through a separate business, Hypnos Contract Beds, and keeps those ranges for the trade, so at home you choose from its retail mattresses. At the very top end, Savoir sells its Nº2 as the original Savoy mattress, priced well into five figures.

Hotel mattresses are built to a stricter fire rating. SATRA explains that hotels, hospitals and other non-domestic settings should meet the medium, high or very high hazard levels of BS 7177, which add a larger ignition test (known in the trade as Crib 5) to the cigarette and match tests every home mattress must pass. That protects a building full of strangers and adds nothing to comfort. The hotel-branded beds also come with thinner buying terms, with no sleep trial on the Premier Inn or Travelodge mattress, so lie on one in a hotel room before you order.

Pick by the way you sleep

Side sleepers who like to sink in should start with the pillowtops, where shoulders and hips meet a deeper soft layer. Back sleepers, front sleepers and heavier people usually prefer a flatter, more even surface with no deep soft layer on top, such as the Aspire 7000 Dual Sided or the Hotel Supreme 1400. If you overheat, natural wool fillings and the gel-topped Cool Refresh 3200 handle warmth better than a memory foam top. For a sore back, our back pain ranking goes further than any hotel can, and our best mattresses ranking covers every type of mattress, hotel-style or not.

Methodology

How we rate

We judged every mattress on what makes a hotel bed comfortable and what lets it survive years of nightly use. The feel had to sit in the medium band hotels choose for the widest range of guests. Then we looked at the comfort layer (pillowtop, tufted natural fillings or gel), the details that slow wear (spring count, hand side stitching, a second sleeping side or a zip-off top) and the price of a king, because a bigger bed is half the hotel effect.

Each pick carries our test score out of 10, built from comfort, support, temperature and value. The order also weighs value in a king and how easy the mattress is to buy, which is why the Aspire Cashmere 1000 sits above dearer picks with slightly higher scores, and why the Premier Inn Mattress 2.0 comes last on its 14-day returns and missing sleep trial. Prices, sizes and stock were checked on the sellers’ own pages in October 2026 (Aspire, Premier Inn at Home, travelodgebed.co.uk, Sleepeezee, M&S, Mattress Online and Land of Beds for Vispring). Hypnos, one of the biggest hotel suppliers, appears in the guide and not in the ranking because its hotel collections are sold only to the trade.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What mattress do hotels use in the UK?

Most UK hotels use medium to medium-firm pocket-sprung mattresses from British contract makers. Premier Inn's Mattress 2.0 comes from Silentnight and Travelodge's Dreamer from Sleepeezee. Hypnos supplies hotels through Hypnos Contract Beds, and Vispring counts The Dorchester among its hotel partners.

Can you buy a hotel mattress for your home?

Yes, several UK chains sell the mattress from their rooms. The Premier Inn Mattress 2.0 costs £719 in a double from Premier Inn at Home, the Travelodge Dreamer £699 from travelodgebed.co.uk, and Sleepeezee sells its Hotel Supreme 1400 direct from £639.

Which is the best hotel mattress to buy?

Our pick is the Aspire 7000 Pocket Wool Cashmere and Silk Pillowtop, a hand-tufted, medium-firm pillowtop with 7,000 springs. If you want the exact mattress from a hotel chain, the Travelodge Dreamer is the better value of the two chain beds.

Are hotel mattresses firm or soft?

Most hotel mattresses are medium or medium-firm, chosen to suit as many guests as possible, and Premier Inn describes its own Mattress 2.0 as medium-firm.

What is the difference between a hotel mattress and a normal mattress?

The main difference is the fire rating. Hotel mattresses are expected to meet the medium hazard level of BS 7177 or higher, which adds the Crib 5 ignition test to the cigarette and match tests for home use, while the springs and fillings are much like those in a good domestic mattress.

How long does a hotel mattress last?

Hotel mattresses are typically in use for 7 to 10 years, Which? reports, and Premier Inn says its Mattress 2.0 lasts about 12 years because the zip-off topper is replaced every six.

Which Hypnos mattress do hotels use?

Hotels buy from the hospitality collections of Hypnos Contract Beds, which are sold only to the trade. For home use, the closest equivalents are Hypnos's retail models, compared in our Hypnos mattress ranking.
