TEMPUR PRO SmartCool reviewed

The TEMPUR PRO SmartCool is a 21cm memory foam mattress and the shallowest of the three PRO SmartCool depths TEMPUR sells in the UK, next to the 25cm PRO Plus and the 30cm PRO Luxe. The medium firm build covered here has three foam layers under a zip-off cooling cover, and a 135x190 double lists at £2,299 on TEMPUR’s UK shop.

Layers in the medium firm build

Soft, medium and firm versions use their own layer recipes, so these depths apply to medium firm only. Advanced Material is the newest TEMPUR foam. The brand’s claim of its best ever pressure relief rests on TEMPUR’s own internal tests, run by Dan-Foam ApS between May 2022 and March 2023 against TEMPUR Original, so no independent figure stands behind it. On the mattress it gives the slow, close contour memory foam is known for, and very good motion isolation for couples. The trade-off is that changing position takes a little more effort than on pocket springs or latex.

Medium firm has the better evidence behind it for backs. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain published in The Lancet (Kovacs et al., 2003), people given a medium-firm mattress were more likely than those given a firm one to report less pain while lying in bed after 90 days (odds ratio 2.36) and less disability (odds ratio 2.10). TEMPUR’s medium firm is the maker’s own label rather than a reading on the European H(s) scale the trial used, so read it as a pointer in the same direction. Anyone who prefers a plusher or harder bed can pick soft, medium or firm at the same price.

Heat is the usual complaint about dense memory foam. The SmartCool cover is designed to absorb excess heat at the surface, and TEMPUR asks owners to use a base with legs or castors and to leave off the valance so air can reach the mattress. Expect a cool first touch rather than the through-airflow of a sprung mattress.

UK sizes, list prices and weights

The PRO SmartCool comes in 11 UK sizes in total, including long single, small double, long double and euro king sizes for adjustable and continental bases. List prices are correct at the time of writing (September 2026), and TEMPUR runs offers most months. Delivery to mainland UK is free and quoted at 14 to 28 days, with free recycling of an old mattress. Direct orders include the 100-night home trial, which asks you to keep the mattress for at least 60 nights before a return, and a 10-year guarantee.
