IKEA Valevåg Pocket Sprung Mattress reviewed

The IKEA Valevåg is a 24 cm pocket sprung mattress with five comfort zones and a polyurethane foam top, and it sits between the 20 cm Vesteröy and the 28 cm Vågstranda in IKEA’s UK sprung range. It is sold in all five UK standard sizes, including Small double, in medium firm and firm versions at the same price. This review covers the medium firm version.

Construction

The IKEA Valevåg product page quotes 249 springs per square metre in a 90x200 cm mattress, arranged edge to edge in five zones that are softer under the shoulders and hips. Above the springs sits polyurethane foam at 33 kg per cubic metre with a layer of polyester wadding. The edges are reinforced for sitting on, and the stretch cover is quilted with extra wadding but cannot be removed or washed.

Firmness

IKEA labels the version reviewed here medium firm, and we place it at 6 out of 10 on our scale, where 10 is firmest. The five zones give more at the shoulders and hips than in the middle, which suits side and back sleepers. Front sleepers and heavier sleepers who want a flatter, harder surface can order the firm version at the same price. Research gives no reason to chase a hard mattress for back pain: in a Lancet trial of 313 adults (Kovacs et al., 2003), medium-firm mattresses beat firm ones on pain in bed, pain on rising and disability after 90 days.

IKEA marks all Valevåg sizes as a new lower price; the Double previously cost £229. These are the current regular prices at the time of writing (September 2026).
