The Healthbeds Latex 1400 is a 26cm medium-firm, non-turn mattress that puts a 40mm layer of latex over 1,400 pocket springs (in a king size), made to order by Healthbeds at its factory in Thurcroft, Rotherham. Healthbeds, which says it has been making sleep affordable for over 130 years, sells only through independent retailers; Big Brand Beds lists it from £445.55, its lowest price across the six sizes.

Feel and who it suits

Healthbeds calls the feel medium firm, which we put at 6 out of 10. With only 40mm of latex over the springs, most of the feel comes from the spring unit, so it gives firm, even support with a springy surface rather than deep contouring. That suits back sleepers and couples. Medium firm is also the grade that clinical research supports for low-back pain; the Kovacs trial in The Lancet (2003, 313 adults) found that medium-firm mattresses beat firm ones for pain in bed after 90 days.

The allergy claim

Healthbeds markets the Latex 1400 as ideal for asthma and allergy sufferers, saying dust mites cannot survive on its latex. We have not seen independent evidence for that specific claim. The context matters: NHS advice on allergic rhinitis names house dust mites as a common allergy trigger, but it lists latex too, so the same mattress that may suit a dust mite sufferer is the wrong choice for someone allergic to latex.

Sizes, price and delivery

The Latex 1400 comes in six sizes: small single (75 x 190cm), single (90 x 190cm), small double (120 x 190cm), double (135 x 190cm), king (150 x 200cm) and super king (180 x 200cm). Big Brand Beds shows prices only after you choose a size, so we record its starting price. At the time of writing (September 2026) Big Brand Beds takes a flat 5% off its listed starting price of £469, with no end date stated. Delivery takes 4 to 5 weeks because each mattress is made to order, and no sleep trial is advertised. Healthbeds is on the National Bed Federation member list, whose members are audited against the NBF Code of Practice.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Latex 1400 is one of the least expensive routes to a British-made latex and pocket spring mattress, and its medium-firm feel suits back sleepers best. Side sleepers who want deep contouring at the shoulder should look for more than its 40mm of latex.”
