Bensons Lytham Memory Mattress reviewed

The Bensons Lytham Memory is a 22cm soft mattress that puts a memory foam layer over a deep open coil spring unit, made for Bensons in the UK. It is the softest everyday mattress in the Bensons own label and one of its cheapest, which makes it a natural choice for lighter side sleepers on a budget.

Construction

An open coil unit links its springs together with a spiral wire, which the National Bed Federation’s buying guide describes as the traditional Bonnell design, now less popular than pocket springs. Linked springs spread weight evenly and cost less, but they pass more movement across the bed than pocketed ones, so a restless partner will be felt more than on the Highbury or the Natural Pocket 1000.

Bensons grades the Lytham soft, which we put at 3 out of 10. The memory foam lets shoulders and hips sink, so it suits side sleepers under about 75kg; back and front sleepers usually need more support, and Bensons sells the same build in medium as the Lytham Memory Support. Memory foam also holds more body heat than a fibre top.

What to know before you buy

It is a no-turn mattress, so rotate it rather than flipping it. The guarantee is five years, backed for defects by the Bensons Lifetime Guarantee, and the 40 night comfort guarantee allows one exchange between night 5 and night 40 for 10% of the price plus re-delivery, so you can move to the medium version if soft turns out to be too soft.
