Bensons Natural Pocket 1000 Mattress reviewed

The Bensons Natural Pocket 1000 is a 23cm medium pocket sprung mattress with bamboo and TENCEL fibres in its quilted top, sold only online at bensonsforbeds.co.uk. It is one of the cheapest ways into a 1,000-spring mattress at Bensons, and the only one in its price band with natural fibres in the comfort layer.

Construction

Bamboo and TENCEL are both breathable cellulose fibres, which is why Bensons pitches this model at warmer sleepers. They sit in a quilted layer above the springs rather than forming a deep natural filling, so treat them as a cooler-feeling surface, not as a wool or latex mattress. Bensons says the Truecomfort filling in a double uses the equivalent of 50 plastic bottles.

Bensons grades it medium, our 5 out of 10, and at 23cm it is a slimmer mattress than the Highbury Ortho Comfort. That suits a child’s or guest room, a bunk-height frame or anyone who wants a supportive, springy surface without paying for depth.

What to know before you buy

Being an online exclusive, you cannot lie on it in a Bensons store first, which makes the 40 night comfort guarantee more important: one exchange between night 5 and night 40, for 10% of the price plus re-delivery, if you have used a mattress protector. The guarantee is five years, extended for defects by the Bensons Lifetime Guarantee. It is single-sided, so rotate it head to foot rather than flipping it.
