“Start with the Octasmart Plus and move to the Deluxe or the Octasmart only if you know you want a softer or firmer feel. Check the offer price before you pick a tier, because Dormeo's promotions can make a higher model cheaper than a lower one.”
Which Dormeo topper tier to buy
Dormeo sells its toppers in two depths. The Octasmart Essentials and Essentials Cooling are 5cm deep and use an Octacell foam layer with no springs, while the other six are 7cm deep and built around Octaspring foam springs. Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation, sets 5cm as the floor. “When shopping for a topper, aim for one that’s at least 5 cm (2 inches) deep. Anything thinner is unlikely to make a noticeable difference in comfort.” The Essentials models sit exactly on that line and the 7cm models clear it.
Price does not follow the tiers. Dormeo discounts often, and until 28 September 2026 the Deluxe was half price and the Plus £50 off, while the standard Octasmart was at full price. That put the Deluxe single below the Octasmart single. The table uses regular double prices so the models compare like for like, so check the live offer before you settle on a tier.

Feel, zoning and back pain
The Plus and Body Zone are medium, the Octasmart is medium/firm, the Deluxe and Pure Memory are medium/soft, and both Essentials models let you choose Plush Comfort (memory foam) or Firmer Support (Aerocell foam) at the same price. For back pain, the best-known evidence points to the middle of the scale. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain, published in The Lancet, Kovacs and colleagues (2003) gave participants firm or medium-firm mattresses for 90 days. The medium-firm group did better on pain in bed (odds ratio 2.36), and the authors concluded that “A mattress of medium firmness improves pain and disability among patients with chronic non-specific low-back pain.” The trial covered mattresses, not toppers, but it favours starting with a medium model.
The Plus and the Octasmart have three body zones; the Body Zone has five, two firmer under the back and hips and three softer for the head, shoulders and legs. Tom’s Guide rated the Deluxe 4 out of 10 for firmness, reported that its lead tester’s hips dipped when she slept on her back, and judged it ideal for lightweight side sleepers.
Heat
A 2012 review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology by Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno concludes that, in real-life conditions with bedding and clothing, heat exposure increases wakefulness and reduces slow-wave and REM sleep. Dormeo describes the open Octaspring honeycomb on its Body Zone product page as up to 8x more breathable than traditional memory foam. The Essentials Cooling adds a Cool Touch cover that Dormeo says keeps you up to 40% cooler than a standard polyester mattress cover. Both figures are Dormeo’s own rather than an independent test. The same cover comes on the Octaspring Body Zone Cooling, ranked third here, a 7cm five-zone model with an 8-year warranty, three years more than the standard Body Zone, at £349 for a double.
Trial and warranty
Every topper here comes with Dormeo’s 200-night trial, with at least 30 nights recommended before deciding. For selected mattresses and toppers the buyer pays for the return, and Dormeo’s own courier charges £45, deducted from the refund. The 8-year warranty on the Octasmart models is pro rata, with full cover for two years, a 25% reduction in year three and a 95% reduction in year eight, and the removable cover is guaranteed for 1 year only. The same terms treat a 5% to 15% loss of thickness as normal and set a limit of 22 stone per side.
Slipping and care
Against slipping, Bed Advice UK suggests non-slip backing or elastic corner straps, and Dormeo uses the first but not the second. Tom’s Guide wrote that testers and online reviewers found the Deluxe shifted even under a fitted sheet. A fitted sheet deep enough to go over mattress and topper together is the practical fix. On washing, Dormeo’s product FAQ says most of its topper covers are dry clean only, while the Octasmart Plus page lists its cover as washable at 40°C, so check the care label.
When a topper is the wrong buy
As Bed Advice UK puts it, “A mattress topper isn’t a quick fix for a mattress that’s past its prime.” The same site notes that most mattresses begin to lose their shape and support after around 7 to 8 years.
