We score it 4 out of 10 for firmness. Dormeo recommends it for people who wake with aches and pains; that is the manufacturer’s positioning rather than a tested claim, but a soft, deep topper is the standard way to add pressure relief at the shoulder and hip for side sleepers on a firm mattress. Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation, gives the ground rules in its topper guide: at least 5cm deep, and no topper will fix a mattress with deep dips.
Because the springs are hollow, Dormeo says the topper is eight times more breathable than a traditional memory foam topper. That matters more than it sounds: a 2012 review by Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno puts the bed climate for normal sleep at about 32 to 34°C and 40 to 60% humidity, and memory foam tends to trap heat. The non-slip base also lets it double as an occasional guest bed on a sofa or the floor.
The mattress underneath matters as much as the topper. In a study of 59 adults in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine (Jacobson et al., 2009), whose beds averaged 9.5 years old, sleep quality improved significantly after a switch to new medium-firm bedding, which is a reminder that no topper replaces a worn-out mattress.
