The Staples & Co Artisan Pure Splendour is a firm, 30cm no-turn mattress with 4,000 pocket springs in two layers and a filling of wool, alpaca, cotton and flax. Staples & Co is the heritage label that Bensons for Beds sells exclusively, and the Splendour is the firm model in its Artisan Pure range.

Springs and fillings

Bensons lists 3,000 mini springs over 1,000 full-height pocket springs. Stacking mini springs on top of a main unit is how makers reach very high counts; the National Bed Federation notes that pocket spring counts typically run from 600 to 2,500 and only occasionally reach 4,000. The mini springs give the surface a quick, resilient response, while the full-height springs do the heavy supporting.

Above them sit cotton and flax, exclusive Wools of New Zealand wool, UK alpaca wool and a wool all-seasons layer, under a Belgian damask cover treated with M-Pure natural fire retardancy. Bensons says the fibres are certified organic to the Global Organic Textile Standard, and the mattress is hand tufted and finished with flag-stitched handles. Comfort Edge Pro reinforcement runs round the border to cut roll-off.

How firm is it?

Bensons sells it in firm and extra firm at the same price. This review covers the firm version, which we place at 8 out of 10. You lie on the surface rather than in it, with just enough give from the mini springs and wool to stop it feeling like a board. Back sleepers, front sleepers and heavier people are the natural fit. Lighter side sleepers will feel pressure at the shoulder, especially on extra firm, and should look at a softer grade.

Size Dimensions (cm) Regular price at Bensons

Double 135x190 £1,399.99

Super king 180x200 £1,899.99

Bensons runs frequent sales. In October 2026 a banner offered up to 20% off mattresses over £750, applied at checkout, so check for a current offer before paying the regular price.

Value against a cheaper firm natural mattress

The obvious rival is the Relyon Heyford Ortho 1500, another firm, cotton-rich mattress made in the UK, which costs £829 for a double against £1,399.99 here. The Relyon has far fewer springs and needs turning every month. The Splendour costs more, but you only rotate it, and you get a richer mix of wool and alpaca. If turning a heavy mattress is not a problem, the Relyon is the better value. For more firm options at different prices, see our firm mattress comparison.

Delivery, guarantee and comfort exchange

Bensons delivers to the room of your choice, with a charge of £49 for a single item over £100 unless a free-delivery offer applies. Its 40 Night Comfort Guarantee is an exchange, not a refund: after at least five nights you can swap the mattress, provided you have used a mattress protector, and charges apply. The mattress carries a 10-year guarantee and is made in the UK. Rotate it regularly, following the care guide, since there is nothing to flip.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“We recommend the Artisan Pure Splendour to back and front sleepers, and heavier people, who want a firm, natural mattress they never have to flip. Lighter side sleepers should look elsewhere, and if you can live with turning a mattress, the Relyon Heyford Ortho 1500 gives a similar firm feel for far less.”
