REM-Fit 4000 Ortho Elite Hybrid reviewed

The REM-Fit 4000 Ortho Elite is a 25cm firm hybrid mattress with 4,000 pocket springs in two layers and 5cm of zoned open-cell memory foam on top, rated 9 out of 10 for firmness by REM-Fit. REM-Fit presents it as its firmest, orthopaedic-level mattress and rates it for sleepers up to 20 stone (127kg). A UK double costs £649.99 at the time of writing (September 2026). The model was previously sold as the 500 Ortho Elite.

REM-Fit lists CertiPUR registration C-AU-UK-0825-235-0272 for the foams. CertiPUR, run by the European foam association EUROPUR, is a voluntary programme that bans certain substances in polyurethane foam, sets limits for others, and has label holders’ foams retested every year by independent laboratories.

Is a 9 out of 10 mattress right for a bad back?

REM-Fit designs the 4000 Ortho Elite for back pain and for people replacing a sagging mattress, and it suits back sleepers, front sleepers and heavier adults well. The clinical evidence is more nuanced than “firmer is better”. In a randomised trial of 313 adults published in The Lancet (Kovacs et al., 2003), people with chronic low-back pain did better after 90 days on medium-firm mattresses than on firm ones, and a 2021 systematic review of 39 studies in the Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology concluded the same. REM-Fit itself suggests checking with a GP or physiotherapist. If you want a little more cushioning, REM-Fit points buyers to its softer 5000 Lux Elite.

Trial, guarantee and delivery

The trial is 100 nights, or 200 nights if you add a mattress protector to the order, after a 30-night bedding-in period. Returns are collected free and sold through British Heart Foundation shops. The guarantee runs for up to 15 years. Delivery is free by two people to the room of your choice, rolled and bagged, and the mattress weighs 38kg in a UK double and 52kg in a super king.
