The M&S 1000 British Wool Pocket Spring Medium Firm Mattress is the entry model in Marks & Spencer’s own-label wool range: a medium-firm pocket sprung mattress with a deep layer of British wool under a 100% cotton cover. It is sold in five UK sizes from £329 for a single, made to order with a 10-day lead time, and delivered to the room of your choice for £15.

What is inside the M&S 1000 British Wool?

M&S names three components on its product page: individually responding pocket springs, a deep layer of British wool and a pure cotton cover. The 1,000 in the name is the spring count. M&S does not say which size that count refers to, and it publishes no depth, spring gauge or wool weight, which is less detail than specialist bed makers give and makes like-for-like comparison harder.

The wool is the reason to buy it. British Wool, the growers’ organisation, states that wool fibres can absorb up to 30% of their weight in moisture without feeling damp. In a mattress that means the surface stays drier on a warm night than a foam top would, and the cotton cover keeps synthetic fabric away from your sheet.

How firm is it, and who is it for?

M&S rates it medium-firm, which we record as 6 on our 1 to 10 scale. That is the band with the best evidence for back pain. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain published in The Lancet (Kovacs et al., 2003), people given medium-firm mattresses reported less pain in bed and on rising after 90 days than those given firm ones. The M&S 1000 suits back and combination sleepers of average weight. Side sleepers who want deep cushioning at the shoulder will find a wool-and-spring surface firmer than a memory foam hybrid, and the M&S 2500 British Wool, with more springs and a medium rating, is the softer step up.

Prices by size

UK size Dimensions Regular price
Single 90 x 190 cm £329
Small double 120 x 190 cm £429
Double 135 x 190 cm £429
King 150 x 200 cm £529
Super king 180 x 200 cm £629

The small double and the double cost the same, so if your frame takes either, the double gives you 15 cm more width at no extra cost. These are regular prices checked on the M&S site at the time of writing (September 2026), with no promotion running.

Delivery and what to check before you order

Furniture delivery costs £15 and is handled by a third-party carrier that books a slot with you by email or text. M&S does not deliver furniture to Northern Ireland, the Orkney Islands or to its stores for collection. The product page names no sleep trial and no guarantee period, so ask before ordering if either matters to you. Like every mattress sold in the UK, it falls under the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, with ignition resistance for mattresses set out in BS 7177, as Trading Standards’ Business Companion guide explains.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Choose the M&S 1000 British Wool if you want a medium-firm (6 out of 10) spring mattress with natural wool and cotton at the surface from a high-street name, and you are happy to buy without a sleep trial. Anyone who wants a published depth, a long home trial or softer shoulder cushioning should look at a bed-in-a-box hybrid instead.”
