The M&S 2500 British Wool Pocket Spring Medium Pillowtop Mattress is the cushioned version of the 2500 British Wool: the same medium support, with a pillowtop that takes the depth to 35.5 cm, according to the M&S product page. It comes in Double and King only and is sold online, delivered to the room of your choice for £15.

Construction

M&S describes individually responding pocket springs, two deep layers of British wool and a pure cotton cover. The 2,500 in the name is the spring count, with no size stated for it. M&S does not describe this pillowtop as removable, unlike the zip-off top of the Ultimate 5000.

Wool is the main comfort material. British Wool, the growers’ organisation, says that wool fibres can absorb up to 30% of their weight in moisture without feeling damp, which is why a wool surface tends to feel drier on a warm night than a foam one.

Who it suits

We record the support as medium, 5 out of 10, as M&S rates it, with the pillowtop adding give at the surface. That suits side sleepers who find a flat-topped sprung mattress hard at the shoulder and hip, and couples sharing a Double or King. Front sleepers and anyone who wants a firm, even surface are better served by the 1500 Extra Firm or the 3500 Firm.

At 35.5 cm it is deep. Check that your fitted sheets have deep enough pockets, and that your headboard still sits right at the extra height, before you order.
