The untreated cover is worth a sentence. Every mattress sold in the UK has to pass the ignitability tests in the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, and many makers meet them with chemically treated fabrics. Harrison Spinks says it weaves the Silver’s cover without that treatment. The company is on the National Bed Federation member list, and NBF members are audited against the NBF Code of Practice, which covers compliance with those flammability rules.

Harrison Spinks is a fifth-generation family business that has made beds since 1840. Its heritage page says it designs and manufactures 100% of its springs and grows hemp and flax on a 300-acre farm in Yorkshire, which is why the Silver lists branded spring systems rather than a generic spring count.

Feel and who it suits

Retailers sell the Silver in soft, medium and firm tensions, with split tensions on zip and link versions. In medium we place it at 6 out of 10: the micro springs sit close to the sleeping surface, so it feels responsive and supportive rather than plush. If back pain is the reason you are shopping, start with the medium tension, because the best trial evidence favours medium-firm over firm: in Kovacs et al. (The Lancet, 2003), 313 adults with chronic low-back pain reported less pain in bed after 90 days on medium-firm mattresses than on firm ones. Side sleepers who want deeper cushioning at the shoulder should consider the soft tension.
