The Relyon Heyford Ortho 1500 is a firm, two-sided pocket sprung mattress, 32cm deep, that gets its support from springs and deep cotton layers rather than dense foam. Relyon’s Classic collection brochure shows it as the firmest model in the range and one of only two that you turn as well as rotate.

Construction

According to Relyon’s Heyford Ortho spec sheet, a king holds 1,500 pocket springs with firmer springs along the sides. Above them sit a cotton foundation layer, a hypoallergenic Superflex foam layer and a deep layer of cotton blended with soft white fibre, upholstered on both faces so either side can be slept on. Three rows of side stitching and wool tufts finish it. Cotton is the main material, so the mattress breathes well despite its depth.

Size Dimensions (cm) Pocket springs Weight Price at Mattressman
Single 90x190 832 36kg £649
Small double 120x190 1,216 45kg £829
Double 135x190 1,312 50kg £829
King 150x200 1,500 59kg £949
Super king 180x200 1,836 71kg £1,149

The weights stand out. Going by Relyon’s figures, a Heyford king is 17kg heavier than the no-turn Luxury Pashmina 2350 in the same size, which tells you how much cotton is packed into it.

How firm is it?

Relyon describes the support as firmer orthopaedic, and Mattressman grades it extra firm, the top of its five-step scale. We place it at 8 out of 10. The word orthopaedic on its own means little, and the National Bed Federation points out that the term follows no universal firmness standard, so the retailer’s grade is the more useful guide. You lie on top of this mattress rather than sinking into it.

Who it suits

Back sleepers, front sleepers and heavier people who find modern mattresses too soft will get the most from it. Lighter side sleepers are likely to feel pressure at the shoulder and hip, and the Luxury Pashmina 2350 or the pillow-topped Luxury Silk 2850 will treat them better.

If you want a firm natural mattress you never have to flip, the Staples & Co Artisan Pure Splendour at Bensons is the no-turn alternative. Expect to pay for that convenience, since a double there costs £1,399.99 against £829 for the Heyford.

Living with a two-sided mattress

Relyon asks you to turn and rotate the Heyford weekly for the first three months and monthly after that, the same routine the NBF recommends for any two-sided mattress. In return, both faces share the wear, which slows the dips that form where you lie.

Buying it

Mattressman sells it with free delivery, flat rather than rolled, and in October 2026 the single, double, king and super king were in stock while the small double was made to order. Baskets over £700 were getting 10% off at checkout. The 60-night trial is exchange-only, with a protector purchase required and a £50 fee. Relyon’s guarantee runs for 10 years.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Heyford Ortho 1500 is the Relyon to buy if you sleep on your back or front, or carry more weight, and want a genuinely firm bed built from cotton rather than foam. Lighter side sleepers should choose something softer, and you will need a second pair of hands to turn a 59kg king.”
