The John Lewis Waitrose Wool 1600 is a 28 cm, medium-firm pocket sprung mattress with British wool on both sides, and it is the model we would point most buyers to in the John Lewis own-label range. A Double costs £829, and the John Lewis product page shows 4.8 out of 5 from 46 customer reviews (October 2026).

What is inside

Under a tufted viscose-blend cover sit British wool traceable to Waitrose farms and other assured UK farms, recycled polymer fibres and a unit of individually pocketed springs. John Lewis’s cross-section, drawn for a King, shows 660 g of wool and 2.7 kg of fibre on each side of 1,600 springs; a Double has 1,443. At least 40% of the polyester is recycled.

Because the fillings are mirrored top and bottom, the care label asks you to turn and rotate the mattress regularly. That is a little more work than the rotate-only models in the range, but it spreads wear over two sleep surfaces.

Feel and who it suits

John Lewis rates the tension medium to firm, the firmness most adults should start from. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain, published in The Lancet by Kovacs and colleagues (2003), people given medium-firm mattresses reported less pain in bed and on rising after 90 days than those given firm ones. Back sleepers and couples get even support here. Side sleepers who want more cushioning at the shoulder will be happier on the Waitrose Wool 1800 Pillowtop.

Sizes and prices

UK size Dimensions (cm) John Lewis price
Single 90x190 £629
Small double 120x190 £829
Double 135x190 £829
King 150x200 £929
Super king 180x200 £1,049

Zip and link versions are also sold in King and Super king, at a higher price.

Guarantee, delivery and trial

The mattress is made in the UK and carries a 7-year guarantee. Standard delivery costs £19.95. It qualifies for the John Lewis 60-Night Comfort Trial, which is an exchange for another mattress rather than a refund: you need a mattress protector bought in the same order, the earliest swap is after night 30, and John Lewis charges £19.95 for collection and £39.95 for recycling the returned mattress.

Drawbacks

The wool rules it out for vegans, the cover does not come off, and the exchange-only trial is less generous than the refund trials of online mattress brands.

Unser Urteil

Fazit
„We recommend the Waitrose Wool 1600 as the first John Lewis mattress to try: medium-firm support, British wool on both sides and a mid-range price suit most sleepers. Pick the Classic Collection 1200 if you want a firmer bed for less, or the 1800 Pillowtop if you sleep on your side.“
