Vispring is a Plymouth manufacturer of hand-made pocket-sprung mattresses, divans and toppers, known in the UK for natural fillings such as British fleece wool, for prices well above the online mattress brands and for a 30-year guarantee. The company behind the brand, Vi-Spring Limited (company 00071430), was incorporated on 24 September 1901 and is registered at Ernesettle Lane, Plymouth.

History and workshop

According to the Vispring story, the Marshall Sanitary Mattress Company was founded in London in 1901 to sell James Marshall’s pocket-spring mattress, took the Vi-Spring name in 1911 and moved production to Plymouth in 1971. The same page says almost 200 craftspeople work in the Plymouth workshop, that the springs are made in-house in 74 spring types from nine wire gauges, and that the company received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2012 and the King’s Award for Enterprise in 2024. Vispring is listed as a member of the National Bed Federation, the UK bed industry’s trade body (certificate 17761450).

Guarantee, trial and after-care

The Vispring FAQ sets out a 30-year guarantee against structural failure, faulty workmanship and defective components, and states that unregistered products are not covered. It also says the mattresses are sold by over 500 retailers. The FAQ mentions no home sleep trial and recommends trying a mattress in a shop before you buy. The same FAQ is candid about settlement. Natural fillings compress at the heaviest contact points, and Vispring’s own guideline for turnable mattresses treats 4 cm of settlement after six months to a year, and 9 cm after 15 years, as normal. Turnable models need turning twice a month for the first three months, then once a season.
