The M&S 1500 British Wool Pocket Spring Medium Mattress is the cheapest medium-feel model in Marks & Spencer’s own-label wool range, and the cheapest M&S medium you can buy as a 4ft small double. It is 26 cm deep, sold online in five UK sizes from £399 for a single, and delivered to the room of your choice for £15.

What is inside it?

M&S lists three components on its product page: individually responding pocket springs, two deep layers of British wool and a 100% cotton cover. The 1,500 in the name is the spring count, but M&S does not say which mattress size it is counted in, so treat it as a tier name rather than a figure to compare with other brands. Against the 1000 model below it, the 1500 adds a second wool layer and moves from a medium-firm to a medium rating.

The page also says the mattress is non-turn and needs rotating, so plan to spin it head to foot from time to time rather than flip it. M&S gives no rotation schedule.

Who is it for?

M&S rates it medium, which we record as 5 on our 1 to 10 scale. That suits back and combination sleepers of average weight and couples who want a middle-of-the-road feel, and the pocket springs move independently, which M&S says reduces the feel of a partner’s movements. Side sleepers who want more give at the shoulder should look at the M&S pillowtop versions, and anyone who wants a harder surface at the same tier has the 1500 Extra Firm.

Buying terms

There is no sleep trial and no guarantee period on the page. M&S lists furniture, mattresses included, among the items it takes back only in line with your statutory rights (M&S returns policy), not under its usual 28-day goodwill policy. For an online order, Citizens Advice explains that you normally get a 14-day cooling-off period after delivery for goods you have not seen in person. Orders are dispatched with a 10-day lead time, and M&S does not deliver furniture to Northern Ireland or the Orkney Islands.
