Dormeo Octasmart Deluxe reviewed

The Dormeo Octasmart Deluxe is a 19cm medium-soft memory foam mattress with 4cm of memory foam over 9cm of Octaspring foam springs in three support zones. It is the softer, deeper sibling of the Octasmart Plus, with twice its memory foam, and the regular price is £1,039 in a UK double. Dormeo’s reviews average 4.5 out of 5 from 267 buyers.

Deluxe against Plus

The Octasmart Deluxe page on dormeo.co.uk uses the same Octaspring core as the Plus. Only the comfort layer and the depth change.

Heat

Memory foam tends to hold heat. Dormeo’s answer is its Octavent system, in which the comfort pockets in the removable cover work with the Octasprings to move air through the mattress, although Dormeo publishes no temperature figures for it. Temperature matters for sleep quality: a 2012 review by Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno found that heat exposure increases wakefulness and reduces slow-wave and REM sleep.

Who it suits

We score the Deluxe 4 out of 10 for firmness. The 4cm memory foam lets shoulders and hips sink further than on the Plus, which is what side sleepers usually want. Front sleepers and heavier back sleepers risk the hips dropping, and the evidence on back pain favours a medium-firm surface over a soft one. Dormeo’s weight limit is 22 stone per side.

Check the length as well as the feel. Bed Advice UK’s mattress buying guide recommends a bed 10 to 15cm longer than the tallest partner; the Deluxe single and double are 190cm long, so taller sleepers should look at the 200cm king or super king. Dormeo also asks for the mattress to be turned head to toe weekly for its first four weeks.

Trial and warranty

The Deluxe has Dormeo’s 200-night trial with free collection, since it contains Octaspring technology. The Octasmart warranty gives 18 years on the core and one year on the removable cover, in full for the first five years. Slat gaps must not exceed 7.5cm.
