The John Lewis Classic Collection 1200 is a firm, 26 cm pocket sprung mattress, handmade in the UK, and the best-value own-label model for back and front sleepers. It costs £519 in a Double, and with 4.7 out of 5 from 97 reviews on the John Lewis product page it is the most reviewed of John Lewis’s own-label adult mattresses (October 2026).

Construction

A Double holds 1,044 individually pocketed springs under breathable layers of recycled polyester fibre, finished with a smooth cover and traditional hand tufting with felt washers. There is no wool, linen or foam in the listing, which is where the saving over the Waitrose Wool range comes from. John Lewis describes the 1200 as the firmest of its three Classic models, and its care label says to turn and rotate it regularly.

Who it suits

Firm suits people who sleep on their back or front and dislike sinking in. It is not automatically the healthier choice: a 2003 trial in The Lancet found that adults with chronic low-back pain did better on medium-firm mattresses than on firm ones. If you sleep on your side, or are unsure, the medium-to-firm Classic 1400 or the Waitrose Wool 1600 are safer starting points.

The 1200 carries a 7-year guarantee, standard delivery costs £19.95, and it is covered by the John Lewis 60-Night Comfort Trial. That trial lets you exchange the mattress once for another model, not return it for a refund, and only if you bought a mattress protector in the same order.

Drawbacks

Side sleepers will find the firm tension hard at the shoulder and hip, polyester fillings regulate temperature less well than wool, and the cover is fixed. Standard delivery adds £19.95, and the Waitrose Wool 1200, with the same firm tension and wool fillings, costs a little more.
