The Simba Natural Hybrid Escape is a foam-free 30cm mattress that layers British and Hampshire wool over two layers of Aerocoil microsprings and a seven-zone steel base, for up to 4,800 springs in a king. It is the middle model of Simba’s three Natural Hybrid mattresses, sold as medium-firm/plush (5 out of 10 on our scale), with a regular price from £1,249 for a single.

What is inside the Natural Hybrid Escape?

Ten layers and no foam, according to Simba’s UK product page. Spring counts are for a king.

Layer Material What it does
1. Cover Plant-derived viscose, invisible tufting, bio-based fire retardant Smooth sleep surface
2. Cushioning Quilted Hampshire wool Soft, springy top
3. Comfort Quilted British wool Comfort and breathability
4. Comfort Quilted Hampshire wool Extra cushioning over the Source
5. Support Thick British wool Support above the springs
6. Microsprings Up to 1,900 titanium-alloy Aerocoil springs, made in Leeds Pressure relief, low motion transfer
7. Stability British wool Airflow between the spring layers
8. Microsprings A further 1,900 Aerocoil springs Second layer of responsive support
9. Stability British wool Stability above the base
10. Base CoreMax, up to 1,000 high-carbon steel barrel springs in seven zones, made in Hampshire Support to the edge, reinforced frame

How does it differ from the Source and the Apex?

The Escape is the Natural Hybrid Source with two layers added: a second quilted Hampshire wool comfort layer and a second layer of 1,900 microsprings, separated from the first by British wool. That takes the build from 28cm and up to 2,900 springs in the Source to 30cm and up to 4,800 here. The Apex goes a step further, with cashgora and silk in its upper layers, up to 6,700 springs and a 32cm depth, and Simba labels it plush where the Escape sits between medium-firm and plush.

Where the wool comes from

The wool provenance can be checked. Simba says all of it is farmed in the UK or is Hampshire wool sourced under the Traceable British Wool Scheme, and British Wool states that all the wool it grades comes from British farms and can be traced to one of its eight grading depots. Simba describes the Natural Hybrid range as sourced and crafted in the UK.

Who is it for?

Side sleepers and couples who want natural fillings and a softer surface than the Source gives, without paying Apex prices. Simba says the two microspring layers keep a partner’s movement from reaching your side of the bed, a claim we attribute to Simba rather than repeat as measured. A single costs the same as a Simba Hybrid Luxe single, £1,249, so the choice between the two is a foam-free, flat-delivered build against the Luxe’s third microspring layer and boxed delivery.

The trade-offs come with the wool. The cover is not removable and Simba’s product page makes a protector a condition of the 10-year guarantee, the mattress must never be vacuumed, and Simba asks you to rotate it head to foot every couple of months for the first six months, then twice a year. Four carry handles make the rotating easier.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Natural Hybrid Escape is the Simba to choose if the Source feels too firm and the Apex costs more than you want to spend, because its second microspring layer and extra wool give a softer top than the Source for less than an Apex. Choose the Hybrid Luxe instead if you prefer boxed delivery and a third microspring layer, since a Luxe costs the same in every size both are sold in.”
