The Simba Natural Hybrid Apex is a foam-free 32cm mattress that layers cashgora, silk, British wool and Hampshire wool between three layers of Aerocoil microsprings and a seven-zone steel base, for up to 6,700 springs in a king. It is the most expensive of Simba’s three Natural Hybrid mattresses, with a plush feel we place at 4 out of 10 and a regular price from £1,499 for a single.

What is inside the Natural Hybrid Apex?

Simba’s UK product page lists twelve layers and no foam. Spring counts are for a king.

Layer Material What it does
1. Cover Plant-derived viscose, invisible tufting, bio-based fire retardant Smooth sleep surface
2. Cushioning Quilted blend of silk, cashgora goat wool and British wool Soft top layer
3. Comfort Quilted British wool Breathability
4. Comfort Hampshire wool Resilience and moisture control
5. Comfort Thick British wool Pressure relief
6, 8 and 10. Microsprings Three Aerocoil layers, 5,700 titanium-alloy springs in total, made in Leeds Contouring, low motion transfer
7, 9 and 11. Wool British wool between and below the spring layers Stability and airflow
12. Base CoreMax, up to 1,000 high-carbon steel barrel springs in seven zones, made in Hampshire Body-aligned support, reinforced edge

Where do the materials come from?

Simba says the wool is farmed in the UK or is Hampshire wool sourced under the Traceable British Wool Scheme run with British Wool, while the silk and cashgora are sourced from China. British Wool describes its traceability as covering every bale back to the farm, with wool graded into one of 100 grades at eight depots across the UK. The mattress itself is crafted in the UK and delivered flat rather than rolled.

Living with it

The natural fillings bring rules. The cover does not come off, so Simba strongly recommends a protector, you should never vacuum it, and it should be rotated head to foot every couple of months for the first six months and twice a year after that. Buyers happy with wool and springs but no silk or cashgora, and a firmer, medium-firm feel, should look at the Natural Hybrid Source, which costs 41% less in a double. Between the two sits the Natural Hybrid Escape, which Simba lists at 30cm with up to 4,800 springs across ten layers and a medium-firm to plush feel.

Size Dimensions (cm) Regular price

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Natural Hybrid Apex is for buyers who want a plush, foam-free mattress and accept paying for it, since a double costs 69% more than the Natural Hybrid Source. Anyone who wants low maintenance should weigh the non-removable cover and the rotation schedule Simba asks for.”
