Silentnight Soft Like Down 2.5cm is a synthetic mattress topper made to feel like a feather and down topper, sold at Argos in all five UK bed sizes. It gives a fluffy, light surface for people who like the feel of down but do not want feathers in the bed.

How it is made

The Argos product page lists a 100% polyester microfibre cover and reverse around a synthetic filling, elasticated corner straps and a single size of 193 by 90cm at 2.5cm deep. The filling is described as non-allergenic, and the topper is machine washable and safe in a tumble dryer. Silentnight’s product images say it is made in the UK. They also show two different guarantee lengths, 2 years on one image and 5 years on another, so check the label when it arrives rather than relying on either.

Feel and who it suits

Down-like fibre is finer and softer than the springy hollowfibre in most cheap toppers, so the surface feels plush and settles around you rather than pushing back. At 2.5cm the effect stays on the surface. We rate the feel medium soft, 4 on a 10-point scale. It suits back and front sleepers who want a softer touch on a mattress that already supports them, and anyone who wants to try a down-style feel for a fraction of the cost of real goose down. It will not relieve pressure at the hips and shoulders the way a 5cm or deeper topper can.

Synthetic or real down

The case for synthetic fill is mainly practical, because this topper goes in a domestic washing machine and tumble dryer. Allergy UK’s house dust mite factsheet recommends washing bedding at 60°C or above to kill mites; Silentnight gives no temperature for this model, so follow the care label.
