The Jay-Be Bio Fresh Hybrid 2000 is a 23cm, medium-feel pocket sprung mattress aimed at allergy sufferers. Its knitted cover is infused with margosa oil, which Jay-Be adds to repel dust mites, and linseed oil, which it chooses for resistance to microbes and the odours they cause.

Construction

Underneath, the build matches the other Hybrid 2000 models: deep pocket springs, a layer of Micro e-Pocket springs above them, high-density e-Fibre insulation, Rebound and Advance e-Fibre and a premium comfort layer enriched with peppermint leaf extract. The product page says that layer blends bamboo, nettle, mint and wool, so vegans should look at the Truecore or Ryze ranges instead. A 3D mesh border helps the sides breathe, the fabric is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and the fire retardant is salt based.

Feel and who it suits

Jay-Be rates it medium, which we score at 5 out of 10, with enough cushioning from the micro springs for side sleepers and a level base for back sleepers. The anti-mite treatment is Jay-Be’s claim and we have not seen independent test data for it. What helps more is routine: the NHS advises people with house dust mite allergy to use synthetic bedding and covers and wash bedding at 60C or above, and the Bio Fresh cover does not come off, so budget for a washable protector.

Jay-Be’s guarantee page gives pocket sprung mattresses 10 years. If you want the anti-allergy cover for less money, the Pure Anti-Allergy Pocket Sprung model uses the same plant oils on an 800-spring core.

Within Jay-Be’s Hybrid 2000 family, the Bio Fresh is the cheapest of the four models with a natural fibre comfort layer, and it shares its springs with the Bio Cool, the Natural Fresh and the Natural All-Seasons. Pick it over those when allergies, rather than heat or natural fibres, are the reason you are buying.

Delivery and returns

Bought from jaybe.com, the mattress arrives rolled and vacuum packed, with free next-working-day delivery to mainland UK on orders placed before noon. There is no sleep trial: Jay-Be’s returns policy lets you cancel within 30 days of delivery and then gives you 14 days to send it back, and a collection charge or a deduction for loss in value may come off the refund. Retailers that stock Jay-Be set their own trial and returns terms.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Bio Fresh suits a household where dust mites or stale smells are the worry: it pairs Jay-Be's best spring system with a plant-oil treated cover. Add a washable protector, because the cover itself stays on the mattress.”
