The Aspire Alpaca Silk 5000 Pocket Pillowtop is the most expensive mattress in Aspire’s range and the deepest, at 35cm. It is hand tufted in the UK, with a pillowtop blending alpaca fleece, silk, lambswool and bamboo over a 1200gsm layer of 100% wool, and 5,000 pocket springs below: 1,000 full size and 4,000 micro. Aspire rates it medium-firm. A 4ft6 double costs £1,270.

How it differs from the Alpaca Silk 3000

Alpaca Silk 5000 Alpaca Silk 3000
Depth 35cm 32cm
Micro springs 4,000 in two layers 2,000
Wool rebound layer 1200gsm, 100% wool No
4ft6 double £1,270 £990

The wool layer is the more interesting upgrade. Aspire says on the product page that a 1200gsm wool rebound layer can mimic the feel of foam without its heat, and wool’s breathability is well established: the National Bed Federation calls it a naturally resilient, breathable fibre with good fire retardancy. Aspire adds side vents that push warm air out of the mattress, and four rows of side stitching with firm edge support so the edge holds when you sit on it.

The second layer of 2,000 micro springs sits between the two halves of the comfort build, with a polycotton rebound layer in between, so pressure from a shoulder or hip spreads across more springs before it reaches the 1,000-spring core. That is aimed at side sleepers and anyone who wants deep cushioning with a supportive base.

Who it suits

It suits a side sleeper who wants a deep, cushioned surface and prefers natural fibres to foam, in a bedroom where a very deep, heavy mattress will not be a problem. Delivery is free to the doorstep on the UK mainland; carrying it upstairs is a two-person job, so consider Aspire’s paid room-of-choice service for the larger sizes.

Break-in, warranty and returns

With this much natural filling, Aspire warns the mattress will feel considerably firmer for the first one to two weeks before settling into its intended medium-firm feel. There is no sleep trial, so that settling happens at your risk. A mattress with a broken hygiene seal cannot be returned under the 14-day cancellation right, according to Aspire’s returns policy, and the 5-year warranty is pro rata after year one.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“If you want Aspire's best and sleep on your side, the Alpaca Silk 5000 is the one: deeper natural fillings, a real wool layer and twice the micro springs of the 3000. At this price, though, you are buying craftsmanship rather than support, since it shares its 1,000-spring core with Aspire's much cheaper 3000 pillowtops.”
