“Start with the TENCEL Blend if your mattress feels too hard, and treat the fibre toppers as a softer, cheaper refresh. Before you pay, check how each one is cleaned, because most of the range never goes near a washing machine.”
Foam, fibre, down or wool
The filling decides what a Dorma topper can do. Memory foam is the only one that moulds to your shape and spreads pressure at the shoulder and hip, and the TENCEL Blend is the only foam model in the range. Its foam is CertiPUR certified: under the CertiPUR programme, foam samples are tested in independent laboratories, the label lasts three years and control tests run every year.
Five of the toppers use recycled polyester fibre, which cushions the surface, feels springy rather than enveloping, sleeps cooler than foam and costs less. The Hungarian Feather Dual is the natural-filled option. Its top layer is 70% goose down. BS EN 13186, the European specification for feather and down bedding, lets a product be advertised as a down product from 60% down, according to IDFL’s summary of the European labelling standards, so the top layer clears that bar on its own while the all-feather base does not. The Luxury Wool Reversible is different again, a wool and cotton surface over polyester fibre rather than a wool filling. If none of these fits, our overall mattress topper ranking covers every major brand.
How much depth your mattress needs
Depth is the clearest guide to how much a topper changes the bed. Dunelm sells the Full Forever and the Anti-Allergy in 3cm or 6cm, the Dream Dual Layer is 5cm, the Sumptuous Soft 7cm and the TENCEL Blend 6.5cm or 10cm; it gives no depth for the Full Forever Dual, the Hungarian Feather Dual or the wool topper. A 3cm layer takes the edge off a hard mattress. If you sleep on your side and your shoulder presses into a firm bed, go to 6cm or more, and to the 10cm TENCEL Blend if you want to sink in further. No topper corrects a mattress that sags, because it follows the shape of whatever is underneath.
Washing, allergies and the 60°C rule
Care varies more across this range than any other specification. Only the Luxury Wool Reversible is machine washable as a whole, and Dunelm specifies a high-capacity launderette machine. The Full Forever Dual and the Hungarian Feather Dual have top layers that come off for a domestic wash, while their bases are spot clean only. Everything else is spot or sponge clean.
That matters if you have a dust mite allergy. Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust advises in its dust mite guidance: “Wash all bedding that is not encased in allergy covers on a 60º Cycle including pillows, quilts, blankets, duvets”. No Dorma topper can be washed that way in full, and the Anti-Allergy version’s treated fibre is sold to stop bacteria growing, not as a mite barrier. If you are allergic, put a breathable barrier cover or one of our recommended mattress protectors over whichever topper you choose.
Guarantee, returns and sizes
Only two Dorma toppers state a guarantee. Dunelm’s guarantee list gives the TENCEL Blend 10 years, and the Dream Dual Layer’s product page states 2 years. None of the range comes with a sleep trial. Under Dunelm’s returns policy, a mattress topper is refunded on a change of mind only if it comes back unused, sealed and in its original packaging, an exception that regulation 28 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 allows for sealed goods unsuitable for return on hygiene grounds. In practice, once the bag is open, the topper is yours.
Every Dorma topper comes in single, double, king and super king. Only the Full Forever and the Anti-Allergy add a small double (3cm only) and an emperor (6cm only). Dunelm lists several of its super kings as 183cm wide, so expect a little overhang on a 180cm mattress. Shopping for a double from any brand? Our double mattress toppers comparison ranks the wider field.
