The Early’s of Witney Duck Feather & Down Mattress Topper 5in is a 5in (about 13cm) deep topper filled with 90% duck feather and 10% duck down in a 233 thread count cambric cotton cover, priced from £99 for a single. Early’s sells it next to a two-layer goose feather and down Duo topper and two machine-washable microfibre toppers; this is the duck feather option, aimed at a plump, sink-in hotel feel.

Construction

According to Early’s product page, the filling sits in a cassette construction, which stitches the topper into separate compartments so the feathers cannot all drift to one end, and all four corners are elasticated to fit most mattresses. Early’s says all of its natural duvets, pillows and toppers are supplied under the Responsible Down Standard, which Textile Exchange sets out as banning live plucking and force-feeding. Early’s does not publish a fill weight.

Prices by size

Early’s terms and conditions still say that orders under £300 pay £15 plus VAT for delivery and that prices exclude VAT. The checkout says otherwise. On 28 September 2026 a single sent to addresses in Witney and Manchester showed free standard delivery and the table price with VAT already included, so the prices above are what you pay. Orders are dispatched within 24 hours and usually arrive within two to five days.

Feel and who it suits

We rate it soft, about 3 out of 10. At 5in the Early’s topper is nearly twice as deep as the 7cm Scooms Hungarian goose topper. That depth suits side sleepers who find their mattress hard at the shoulder and hip. It adds cushioning, not support, so it will not rescue a sagging mattress. Like any feather topper it flattens where you lie, so plan on shaking it out every few days. What the price buys is depth and the cambric cover. Early’s gives no fill weight or certification beyond RDS; if those matter to you, Scooms publishes its fill weight for every size and names four standards, at roughly twice the price for a single.

It is not the right choice for allergy sufferers: the NHS suggests synthetic bedding washed at 60°C and above for people with allergic rhinitis, and this topper is neither.
