The John Lewis Muscovy Duck Down Dual Layer Mattress Topper is the most down-rich topper John Lewis sells under its own name, with a top layer of 95% Muscovy duck down and 5% duck feather over a base of 100% duck feather. It is 5cm deep, comes in a 320 thread count cotton cover and is the premium pick in our John Lewis mattress topper ranking.

Construction

The John Lewis product page lists China as the country of origin, a fire-retardant finish and a fit for mattresses up to 32cm deep. The two layers explain the feel. Down is light and lofty but compresses easily, so the all-feather base underneath gives it something firmer to rest on. A double weighs 6.7kg, much heavier than a fibre topper of the same size.

Down sourcing and allergies

The fill is certified to the Responsible Down Standard, which Textile Exchange describes as a third-party certification covering animal welfare and the chain of custody that prohibits force-feeding and live-plucking of waterfowl. John Lewis also says the topper is Nomite certified as suitable for dust allergy sufferers. That label concerns the cover and fill, not washing: the topper itself cannot go in the machine, so Allergy UK’s advice on allergen-proof mattress covers still applies.

Care

It is spot clean only and must not be tumble dried or dry cleaned. Shake it out regularly to keep the down spread evenly across the bed. It carries a two-year guarantee.

Sizes and prices

Like every John Lewis topper, it can only be returned unopened, unused and with its seals intact unless it is faulty, and there is no sleep trial. Standard delivery was free on orders over £50 (£4.50 below that) and Click and Collect free over £40 when we checked in October 2026.

Who it suits

It suits a sleeper who wants a soft, lofty, hotel-style surface and does not mind the shaking out that down needs. A 5cm feather topper softens a bed rather than supporting it, so it is not the answer to a mattress that feels uneven. For a five-year guarantee at a lower price, the John Lewis Duck Feather and Down Dual Layer has a 50% down top layer instead.
