Construction

The John Lewis product page lists a soft polyester cover and 100% polyester filling, a fire-retardant finish and China as the country of origin. The two layers do different jobs. The base gives the topper a little body so it does not bottom out on a firm mattress, and the upper layer adds the loft you feel. Elastic straps hold it on mattresses up to 32cm deep, which covers most standard pocket-sprung and foam mattresses but not every deep hybrid or pillow-top.

Washing and care

The upper layer washes at up to 40°C in a large-capacity machine and tumble dries on a cool setting, and John Lewis says it must be completely dry before it goes back on the bed. Because the base stays put, you strip and remake only half the topper. John Lewis advises against using it with an electric blanket, which it says would significantly limit its effectiveness.

A 40°C wash removes dust mite allergen for a while, but Allergy UK says it takes 60°C or above to kill the mites themselves, so people with a mite allergy still need an allergen-proof cover on the mattress.

Sizes and prices

It is one of only two John Lewis own-brand toppers made in a small double, and it carries a two-year guarantee.

Like every John Lewis topper, it can only be returned unopened, unused and with its seals intact unless it is faulty, and there is no sleep trial. Standard delivery was free on orders over £50 (£4.50 below that) and Click and Collect free over £40 when we checked in October 2026.

Who it suits

It suits anyone who wants a softer surface on a firm mattress and expects to wash the topper often, including homes with children or pets. It is not a support layer and will not even out a mattress that has started to dip. If you prefer natural fibres, the John Lewis British wool topper costs less in a double but cannot go in the washing machine.
