Relyon Guildford 1000 reviewed

The Relyon Guildford 1000 is a 25cm no-turn pocket sprung mattress with a top layer of British wool and silk, and the cheapest way we have found to buy a Relyon with natural fillings. Relyon makes it for MattressNextDay, which sells it exclusively.

What you get

MattressNextDay’s specification lists 1,000 pocket springs, a deep soft layer, then silk and sustainably sourced British wool held in place by hand-felted tufts, all under a Belgian damask cover with a viscose surface. Edge+ reinforcement runs round the border and air vents are set into the sides. It is handmade in Somerset, single-sided and rated medium.

A thousand springs in a king is a mid-level count. The National Bed Federation puts the floor for a basic king-size pocket mattress at 800 springs, and says that more springs give more individual support. So the Guildford is properly pocket sprung, but its support is less finely divided than on the 2,000-plus models higher up Relyon’s range.

Who it suits

Back and side sleepers of average weight are the target. The medium feel lets the shoulder settle without the hips sinking, and wool and silk keep the surface dry and cool. Heavier sleepers, and couples with a big difference in weight, will notice the lower spring count first and should look at a model with more springs. The Chelsea 1500 Memory adds 500 springs in a king and swaps wool for memory foam, for £529 in a double.

Value

The small double and double cost the same, so if your frame takes either, the price will not decide it. A double at £399 undercuts every other Relyon on our site, and you still get the 10-year Relyon guarantee and hand-felted natural fillings. MattressNextDay prints a much higher RRP next to the price; the selling price has not moved since we started tracking it, so we treat it as the real price rather than a discount.

Delivery, returns and care

Delivery is free to most of the UK mainland, next day for stocked sizes, and the mattress arrives flat. MattressNextDay offers no sleep trial on this model, so returns are limited to cancelling an unopened mattress at your own cost. At 25cm it takes standard fitted sheets. Rotate it head to toe weekly for three months and monthly after that, as the NBF recommends for one-sided mattresses, and expect the wool to settle into shallow impressions over the first weeks.
