The Ortho Pocket Collection is John Lewis’s own-label range for people who want a firm bed, and the 1400 is its entry model. It is the only one of the four with an extra firm tension, and the one most people search for by name.

The number refers to the king size, which has 1,435 zoned pocket springs; the single has 819 and the super king 1,763. Above the springs is a breathable comfort layer made from recycled polyester, and the top is hand-tufted, with hand-stitched sides and handles. John Lewis says the mattress contains at least 70% recycled polyester and can be fully recycled at the end of its life.

It is 26cm deep and single-sided, so you rotate it head to foot rather than turning it. The listed maximum user weight is 200kg. Each mattress is handmade to order in the UK; in October 2026 the Double was in stock online, with standard delivery at £19.95.

It comes in single, double, king and super king, with a 7-year guarantee. John Lewis’s 60-night comfort trial applies, but it is an exchange for a different model, not a refund, and you must buy a mattress protector in the same order.

Specifications and prices are from the John Lewis product page, checked on 4 October 2026, when a Double cost £679. Extra firm is a deliberate choice rather than a cure for back pain: in a 2003 Lancet trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain, those on medium-firm mattresses did better than those on firm ones.

Unser Urteil

Fazit
„We recommend the Ortho 1400 if you want genuinely firm support, particularly for back or front sleeping or a heavier build, from a retailer with a long guarantee and a comfort exchange. Side sleepers will usually be happier with a medium tension model.“
